The Lancer women's soccer team dropped a pair of home games over the weekend, falling 2-0 to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday and 3-1 to the York Lions on Sunday.
The Lancers started off strong against the Gryphons on the rainy Saturday afternoon. Struggling with the wet field, both teams started off the first half strong keeping the game relatively matched.
It was in the 29th minute that Guelph's Alexandra Harris scored in the bottom left corner of the net. The Lancers tried to fight back with many close encounters at the net.
The second half started to the Gryphons advantage with Kaitlyn Mulholland scoring the second goal for Guelph in the 49th minute.
The sun started to peek through the clouds as the game once again became evenly matched and the Lancers started to show presence on Guelph's side of the field.
However, with the Lancers not able to capitalize on any scoring opportunities, the Gryphons took home the win.
From the opening whistle on Sunday, Windsor controlled the tempo of the game with
Robyn Preston playing forward and creating scoring opportunities.
However, the Lions were able to break the Lancers' tough nosed defense and scored the first goal of the game courtesy of Shannon Wood.
The Lancers continued to battle but an unfortunate bounce off a corner kick resulted in another goal for the Lions from Nav Aujla.
The Lancers would hold the Lions from there going into the second half down two but with the momentum starting to turn.
Starting the second half of the game the Lancers had the advantage, as the passing and communication between the girls was in sync. It was during the 73rd minute of the game that
Bella Riccardi was fouled in the penalty box.
Gadeer Sobh took the penalty kick for Windsor and brought the Lancers within one, 2-1. The team's momentum picked up as the women eagerly tried to find the equalizer.
Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful and were left with a bitter ending as York's Colleen Beesley scored an insurance marker for the Lions in the game's final minute.
Windsor will travel to Guelph on Saturday afternoon for a rematch at 1:00pm.
