Korissa Williams tied a career-high with 23 points, and the Windsor Lancers women's basketball team hit the century mark for the second time in the past three contests, topping the Lakehead Thunderwolves 104-55.
Williams was 11-of-23 from the field, while
Jocelyn LaRocque added 17 points for the Lancers (8-1), who have won eight straight contests.
Miah-Marie Langlois and
Jessica Clemencon added 11 apiece for Windsor, and both standouts reached career milestones during Friday's contest. Clemencon moved into second-place all-time amongst OUA scorers in career points, and Langlois became the fourth Lancer in women's basketball program history to reach 1,000 career points.
Kelsey Bardsley totalled 22 in a losing cause for the Thunderwolves (4-5), who dip under the .500 mark heading into tomorrow evening's re-match.
The Thunderwolves jumped out to a 10-2 lead through the first five minutes of the opening quarter, as Kelsey Bardsley drained consecutive three-pointers to help spur the visitors on early. After the women made just two of their first 10 attempts on net, Coach Chantal Vallée took her second timeout late the quarter to get the women back on track.
Rookie
Cheyanne Roger quickly brought the Lancers back within a couple after two straight lay-ups in the low post, and Williams followed that with four more points to even the contest. After Katie Ulakovic dropped a three,
Jocelyn LaRocque sunk a buzzer-beater from just inside half-court to cut the deficit to two after through ten minutes of play.
The hosts went on an explosive 14-3 run in the three minutes of the second, as Williams converted her free throw on two straight three-point plays. The Windsor native led all players with 19 points through two quarters. The duo of Langlois and Williams were relentless in the front court, forcing numerous Thunderwolves turnovers that led to easy baskets. Langlois caught fire, dropping consecutive three's as the Lancer offence came to life in the final ten minutes of the half, outscoring Lakehead 37-14 to take a 23 point spread into the locker rooms.
Windsor increased the advantage throughout the third. Kristine Lalonde and LaRocque traded jumpers from beyond the arc, as did sophomore
Caitlyn Longmuir, helping the three-time defending champions flex their offensive muscle and take an 82-41 stranglehold on the match heading into the final quarter of play.
Windsor shot 46.5% from the floor and outrebounded the Thunderwolves 46-43. The women also forced 31 Lakehead turnovers, while giving up the ball on just nine occasions throughout the evening.
