TORONTO- The Windsor Lancers men's soccer team defeated the Carleton Ravens 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Birchmount Stadium to capture OUA bronze on the last day of the Final Four weekend.
After the teams went into halftime tied 0-0, the Ravens opened the scoring in the 54th minute as Andrew Laddy picked up his own rebound after a great first save by fifth-year keeper
Dejo Olagbegi and shoved the ball in the near corner from the right side of goal.
Carleton's lead was short-lived as three minutes later
Michael Pio headed a corner kick into the top left corner of the Ravens' net, evening the contest at 1-1. Windsor took its first lead of the game in the 73rd minute when the ball squeaked through to
Chris Lanni at the top of the right side of the box. The fourth-year made no mistake, launching a howitzer into the left corner to put Windsor up 2-1.
Cristian Mayorga solidified Windsor's bronze medal with two quick markers just before the final whistle. The sophomore midfielder notched his first goal after taking a cross-field volley and swiftly moving past the Ravens' defender down the right flank before sliding the ball into the left corner. Then, on the final play of the game, Mayorga kicked a low, hard shot from a free-kick about 35 yards out that fooled the Ravens' keeper and found its way into the left side of the net.
The Lancers ended the regular season with a 7-3-6, finishing fourth in the OUA West division. The men slipped past Western 1-0 in the first round of the playoffs, and then stunned the defending conference champion McMaster Marauders last Sunday to earn a place in the Final Four. After a hard-fought 1-0 loss against the CIS No. 2 Ryerson Rams, Windsor was able to rebound to claim an OUA bronze and finish with a 3-1 post-season record.
