WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers women's basketball team will raise its national championship banner for the third straight home opening weekend this Friday night when they host the York Lions at the St. Denis Centre.
Before Friday night's contest between Windsor and York, there will be a special ceremony honouring the Lancers 2012-13 CIS championship squad, as their banner will be raised to the St. Denis Centre rafters. Coverage of the banner raising ceremony as well as the Friday's game will be available at
GoLancers.TV.
After splitting their first two conference matches last weekend, the Lancers will return home as the national No. 2 seed. Their first regular season loss in 38 outings, a 62-58 result against Carleton last Friday, was enough for them to lose their top placing in the CIS to Saint Mary's who, despite not having playing a conference match, was able to jump two spots to No. 1 in the national poll.Â
Windsor (1-1) had trouble finding their shot against the OUA finalist Ravens last week, shooting just 33.3% from the field. This was down 11 points from their CIS-best 44.7% last season, and Carleton was able to take advantage, building a double-digit lead through three quarters of play and holding off a Lancer comeback bid in the final 10 minutes to earn the upset.
The Lancers bounced back in championship form on Saturday against the No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees, shooting a formidable 50.8% to dominate the contest 88-64. Windsor's big-three had strong performances on the night, as
Miah-Marie Langlois led all players with 22 points and notched 10 rebounds to earn a double-double.
Jessica Clemencon and
Korissa Williams combined for 37 points, and the Lancers also received some much-needed secondary scoring after the rest of the squad combined for just 10 points the night before. Not so against the Gee-Gees, as starters
Jocelyn LaRocque and
Tessa Kreiger added eight and seven points respectively while the bench chipped in 14 compared to four against Carleton.
Windsor will host a Lions squad that went 1-1 last weekend, topping Guelph 54-45 before falling to Lakehead 53-39. York, who finished 6-14 last season and bowed out of the first round of the OUA playoffs, is led by Kayla Pangos and Nadia Qahwash who both averaged 11.0 points per game (ppg) last weekend.
Windsor's Saturday evening opponent will be the Queen's Gaels (2-0) who won by single-digits against Lakehead and Guelph. Gemma Bullard tallied a game-high 19 points in Queen's 61-55 win over the Gryphons, while Liz Boag helped the Gaels to a 58-52 win over the Thunderwolves with 14 points on the night.
Both games will tip-off at approximately 6:00 p.m. Live coverage of the games through webcasting and live stats will be available at
