Lancers top Mustangs to clinch OUA West

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- Korissa Williams recorded a game-high 20 points, going 10-of-13 from the floor, and the Windsor Lancers women's basketball team clinched first place in the OUA West division with a 94-64 victory over the rival Western Mustangs on Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre.

The Lancers were an offensive storm throughout the contest, shooting 55.6% as a team and totalling 40 field goals while outrebounding the Mustangs 49-19.  Jessica Clemencon added 18 points, while Bojana Kovacevic notched 14 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Before the contest, the Lancers honoured their graduating athletes in a pre-game ceremony.  Former OUA all-rookie and conference all-star  Kovacevic, CIS Tracy McLeod winner Laura Mullins, Jessica Gordon and Bethanie Wachna were all recognized for their contributions to the women's basketball program.

Williams picked up the Lancers' first four points on back-to-back layups within the first two minutes of the contest.  Four more points came courtesy of the free-throw line, but Jenny Vaughan notched five of her team's first eight points, helping the Mustangs keep pace.

The visitors gained momentum through the latter half of the quarter, picking up consecutive fast-break points to gain the advantage.  Another layup by Vaughan after receiving a back-door pass pushed the lead to six.  Western took a 20-14 lead into the second, but Windsor evened the match with three straight buckets  within the first minute of the stanza.

Kovacevic, who put on a clinic at both ends of the floor in the second period, notched her seventh point of the quarter with a three-ball that pushed Windsor back in front soon after.  Jocelyn LaRocque sunk a three-pointer that spread the lead to eight.  A long jumper by Annabel Hancock was followed by another basket from beyond the arc by LaRocque (Windsor).

Windsor held the visitors to just nine points while scoring 27 in the second, and garnered a 41-29 advantage at halftime.  Williams (Windsor) had a half-high of 12 points, while Vaughan topped the Mustangs with 11.

The Lancers  increased the lead to 15, but Vaughan tried to spark some life in her squad, tallying five more points early in the half.  Annabel Hancock drained a three and followed that with a lay-up.  However, the production remained consistent for the home side, as they still held a 17-point advantage through the quarter.  Clemencon (St. Rambert, France) varied her scoring repertoire, hitting a long bucket after working the low post for two points on an earlier play.

She would hit grab nine points, and Windsor hit 25-plus points for the second straight quarter to take a commanding 69-46 spread into the final period.

Miah-Marie Langlois and Kovacevic traded three-pointers to begin the fourth.  Andrea Kiss (Tecumseh, Ont.) got in on the long-range action dropping a three as the Lancers offensive explosion continued throughout the final quarter.

With the victory, Windsor garnered a perfect conference record at home with a mark of 10-0 and earn their fifth-straight West division title.  The women will look to end the season with an unblemished record this Saturday in St. Catharines, where they will face the Brock Badgers at 2:00 p.m.
