Men's Hockey sweeps York; advances to OUA West semi-finals

Box Score The Windsor Lancer men's hockey team eliminated the York Lions in the first round of the OUA playoffs on Friday night with a 4-2 win over the visiting Lions at Windsor Arena.

Windsor swept the best-of-three series after also winning Game 1 by a score of 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday at Canlan Ice Sports.

The Lancers opened the scoring with the game's first goal at 7:54 of the first period on a power play marker by Spencer Pommells (Grande Prairie, Alta.). That goal represented the only scoring of the first period, and Windsor held a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.

The Lancers doubled their lead early in the second when Christian Steingraber (Oregon, Ohio) put the puck behind York goaltender Andrew Perugini (King City, Ont.) just 1:57 into the period. After that most of the rest of the second remained scoreless until there were less than three minutes left on the clock. Drew Palmer (Tecumseh, Ont.) netted his third goal of the series at 17:03 to increase the Windsor lead to three.

John de Gray (Markham, Ont.) scored York's first goal of the night at 16:28 and then Michael Lombardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.) pulled the Lions to within one at 19:07 after head coach Jim Wells pulled Perugini for the extra attacker.

Windsor's Josh Graves added an insurance marker with twenty-five seconds remaining to give Windsor the 4-2 victory.

Parker Van Buskirk was outstanding in net recording 19 saves in the contest.

Windsor will wait to see who their opponent will be in the OUA West semi-finals. Stay tuned to www.goLancers.ca for all playoff information as it becomes available.
