Box Score The Lancer men's hockey team has advanced to the OUA Western Conference finals for the second straight year after a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night in Guelph.
With the win, the Lancers swept the best of three series in two straight games. They defeated the Gryphons in game one 2-1 on Thursday night at Windsor Arena.
The first period was fast-paced, scoreless and no penalty minutes were recorded. The Gryphons outshot the Lancers 16-9 in the period. Lancer netminder,
Parker Van Buskirk (Windsor, ON), and Gryphon netminder, Andrew Loverock (Elmvale, ON), and both played an excellent period while there was significant pressure maintained at both ends of the ice.
The second period ended with a 1-0 lead for the Windsor Lancers after a power play goal by Spencer Pommels (Grande Prairie, AB) at 16:01. It was a strong, one-time shot from just inside the blue line, which floated over the shoulder of Loverock. Assists were from
Steve Ferry (Richmond Hill, ON) and
Drew Palmer (Tecumseh, ON). The Lancers outshot the Gryphons 15-6 during the second period.
In the third period the Lancer defense was solid against the Gryphons who fought hard for the equalizer. Guelph put up a good fight, pulling the goalie and calling a time out with under a minute left in the third, however Van Buskirk stood strong in net for the Lancers and Windsor took the series 2-0 and will advance to the OUA West finals.
Van Buskirk earned the shut-out, making 31 saves on the night.
