CIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: Lancers advance to semi-finals with win over Ottawa

Box Score The No. 1 seed Lancer women's basketball team advanced to the CIS Championship semi-finals with a 56-46 win over the No. 8 seeded Ottawa Gee Gees on Friday afternoon in the CIS quarter-finals.

With the win, the Lancers will face the winner of the Carleton-Calgary quarter-final on Saturday at 5:00pm (7:00pm Eastern Time).

Korissa Williams was named the Player of the Game leading all scorers with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Jessica Clemencon had the game's only double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, while two-time CIS defensive player of the year Miah-Marie Langlois had 13 points.

It was a tight game right from the opening tip, as both teams struggled to find their groove on offense in the first half. Neither team was able to score until nearly three minutes into the game, when Ottawa's Tatiana Hanlon got the Gee Gees on the board first.

Windsor held a narrow 21-18 lead at the break, after only shooting 19.2% from the field over twenty minutes. The Gee Gees shot a mere 9-33 from the field (27.3%), and were scoreless from the free throw line.

With the teams trading the lead eleven times, and the game tied at 27-27, the Lancers finally sync'd and went on a 12-0 scoring run that spanned over six minutes between the third and fourth quarters. Williams had seven of the twelve points, five of which came from the free throw line.

Ottawa got the Lancer lead down to six on three different occasions down the stretch, but Windsor held on for the win.

Free throws proved to be the difference, as Windsor drew 40 free throws and hit 21 of them while Ottawa was 8-for-10 from the stripe. Both teams picked up their shooting in the second half and ended up at a 32% clip from the field for the game.

Defensively, the Lancers held the Gee Gees to just 8 offensive rebounds, while out-rebounding Ottawa 43-35 in the game.

“They're a tough team, and we're a tough team,” Windsor head coach Chantal Vallée said. “We knew it would come down to the wire. We're ready, the team didn't panic, and we did what we needed to do to win.”
