Olagbegi battles Lancers to a scoreless draw

WINDSOR, On - The Lancer men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Laurier Golden Hawks this afternoon at Alumni Field.

Lancer goalkeeper Dejo Olagbegi and Golden Hawk goalkeeper Brett Herrington both played major parts in the draw.

Herrington, a Tilbury, ON native, had a game high nine saves, while home grown Olagbegi made five.

In the 20th minute, Olagbegi had the first impressive save of the afternoon. When a free kick was delivered into a crowd from just outside the box, a Hawk forward deflected the ball toward the net, forcing the Lancer keeper to make a reflex save.

Herrington made his own remarkable save at the 35th minute. Accepting a pass from Cristian Mayorga, Lancer captain Patrick Ten Eyck snuck behind the Hawk defense forcing Herrington to step up and make a sliding save.

Both teams went into the locker room at the half 0-0, and Lancer head coach Steve Hart talked about the different game plan the Lancers had to transition to in the second half. "In the first half they had four forwards, so we needed to organize and get that point across," said Hart. "They also played three at the back so we had to change to (4-4-2) and try to split them using two forwards."

The changes at half time worked as Windsor slowly began to take control of the game, outshooting the Golden Hawks 27-9.

The goalies weren't the only people making saves on the goal line. In the 55th minute Herrington looked beat for the first time until Hawk rookie Niklas Bauer kept the score tied at zero by blocking Lancer forward Chris Lanni's shot.

"Olagebgi was amazing today," commented Hart. "The saves he pulled off had me wondering what he had for breakfast. He was on fire."

Herrington also made some incredible stops foiling three Lancer breakaway attempts, and leaving Hart wondering if scoring was going to be a problem again this year. "Unfortunately you got to put the ball in the net, that's what counts and if you don't you're in trouble."

"I was so proud of our second half performance," continued Hart. "But we are still trying to figure out how to get the ball into the back of the net."

The Lancers will look for their first win of the season on Sunday when they host UOIT at Alumni Field. Kickoff is set for 3:15pm.
