Women's Soccer shuts out Golden Hawks

WINDSOR, On - The Lancer women's soccer team shut out the Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The win brings the Lancers to 2-1 on the season, and equals their total number of regular season wins from just a year ago.

The 58th minute goal by rookie midfielder Corinne Robinson helped secure all three points for the Blue & Gold.

The first scoring chance of the game went to Laurier, when Julie Mahey found room in the box and laid it off to teammate Kiara Reyes. The shot was blocked by the Lancer defense keeping the score tied at zero.

Later in the 29th minute, Robinson had her first scoring chance of the game when she went one on one with the Laurier keeper Katrina Ward. The low shot was going into the bottom left corner before Ward made a great finger tip save pushing the ball on to the post and out.

The Lancers and Golden Hawks both had great chances to go into their locker rooms up one, but the half ended 0-0.

Windsor's goal came in the 58th after the referee played an advantage giving the Lancers the opportunity to finish off a great team goal.

Cara Cirovski played a perfect through ball to Robinson who took it in stride and coolly slotted it home.

"The team did a great job in the transition and getting the ball back," said head coach Angelo Verardi. "We had great foresight on the run, and it was great pass by Cara."

In the 75th minute, Golden Hawks changed formation in an attempt to put pressure on the Lancers. Windsor, however, stayed strong to hold off the Laurier attack.

"We dropped one of our strikers back a bit just to help the midfielders out. We handled it good," said Verardi.

Tara Bernard-Rae earned her second shut out of the season, making two saves in the win.

The Lancers will look for their second straight win on Sunday afternoon when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at 1:00 pm at Alumni Field.
