No. 1 Lancers clip No. 7 Hawks, win 16th straight

Korissa Williams recorded five points and four rebounds in Windsor's win over Laurier on Wednesday.
Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- Miah-Marie Langlois tallied a game-high 21 points, and the No. 1 ranked Windsor Lancers topped the No. 7 Laurier Golden Hawks 70-59 at the St. Denis Centre on Wednesday evening.

Langlois was 8-of-15 from the floor, and Jessica Clemencon added 18 points and a game-high seven rebounds as the women added another victory to their current win streak, now at 16 games.

Laura Doyle used some strong perimeter shooting to lead the Golden Hawks with 16 points in a losing cause.

After going down 7-6 in the opening quarter, the women went on a 10-0 run with Langlois leading the way, notching 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting through 10 minutes of play. The Golden Hawks responded with a mini-run at the end of the first, bringing the lead down to seven in favour of the hosts heading into the second stanza.

Langlois continued her strong play in the second, knocking down a jumper before locating Caitlyn Longmuir for a bucket from beyond the arc to extend Windsor's advantage. Two points in the post from Clemencon pushed the women's lead into double-digits, while the Laurier offence dried up through the middle portion of the quarter.

Two free-throws from Kimberley Yeldon snapped  Windsor's streak, but Cheyanne Roger completed a three-point play with under a minute left after sinking a lay-up while taking some punishment from Yeldon. Windsor upped the pressure to the full-court variety, forcing a Golden Hawks turnover and taking a 35-21 lead into halftime.

Langlois finished with a half-high of 14 points, while Bree Chaput notched six points for the Golden Hawks who struggled with their shot in the first 20 minutes, knocking down 25.8% of their attempts. Windsor worked at a 43.8% efficiency through one half of play and outrebounded Laurier 21-19.

The visitors outscored Windsor 8-4 to begin the second half, cutting the lead down to 10, but a technical to the Laurier bench resulted in four straight points for the Lancers, negating the guests' earlier progress against the deficit. A three by Doyle was quickly followed by another Langlois jumper for three, and Clemencon pivoted around her defender for a quick two off a pass from Kristine Lalonde.

After moving off a screen by Tessa Kreiger, Lalonde found Longmuir for another deep bucket, spreading the home advantage to 19. Doyle heated up with another long-ranger, and Lee Anna Osei stole an errant Lancer pass and took it to the hoop for a lay-up. She converted an ensuing free-throw, and the Golden Hawks added two more before the end of the third, increasing their shooting efficiency in the third (50%) and cutting the lead down to 12.

Jocelyn LaRocque sank a corner three after Laurier came within 10. Roger then rejected a Hawks lay-up attempt, leading to a transition lay-up by Longmuir. The Etobicoke, Ont. native took a pass from Williams as she drove down the center of the lane, basketing two more points.

Doyle continued to remain potent from three-point land, and the Hawks finally brought the lead into single digits. However, Williams quickly responded with a three-point bucket and ensuing lay-up, solidifying Windsor's 16th straight victory.

Windsor finished with a 43.5% field-goal percentage, compared to 36.7% from the visitors who outrebounded Windsor 38-36.

The women will head to Guelph on Saturday afternoon to take on the Gryphons at 2:00 p.m. Windsor is back at the St. Denis Centre next Wednesday, February 5 to host the Western Mustangs at 6:00 p.m.
