Box Score TORONTO- The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team were topped 84-71 by the defending national champion Carleton Ravens in the OUA Wilson Cup Final Four semi-final on Friday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens.Â
The Lancers will meet their West division rival McMaster in the OUA bronze medal match on Saturday afternoon, when a ticket to the CIS Final 8 national championship will also be on the line. The Ravens will be looking for their third-straight conference banner in Saturday evening's gold-medal match against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Enrico Diloreto recorded a team-high 17 points, and
Lien Phillip added 12 points for the Lancers.
Rotimi Osuntola Jr. picked up the game's only double-double, grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds to go with 10 points.
Alex Campbell and
Khalid Abdel-Gabar also reached double-digits in their first Wilson Cup appearance, adding 11 and 10 respectively in the loss.
Brothers Phillip and Thomas Scrubb garnered 24 and 17 points respectively for the Ravens. Kevin Churchill added 14 to help the nine-time national champions qualify for Saturday's Wilson Cup Final.
The Ravens took an 11-7 lead midway through the opening quarter, but the Lancers used some nice passing on back-to-back possessions to even the contest with consecutive open lay-ups. A block by
Evan Matthews late in the period was followed by a Campbell baseline jumper. However, Churchill tallied a buzzer-beating lay-up, allowing Carleton to take a 17-14 lead after one quarter of play.
The Ravens quickly extended their advantage early in the second quarter, as Scrubb and Churchill exchanged buckets from underneath the Lancers basket. A three-pointer by Clinton Springer-Williams capped off a 12-0 run from the defending national champions, giving them a double-digit lead before Windsor picked up its first points of the quarter.
The No. 7 Lancers responded with a mini-run of their own, starting with two made free throws from Phillip. After Diloreto notched his first points of the game, Campbell made a jumper from beyond the arc to bring the deficit back down to six. Diloreto, who was named a West division first-team all-star earlier this week, sank two more shots from the foul line after the Lancers front-court pressure forced a Ravens turnover.
However, Carleton found its stride once again late in the half, sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from Victor Raso that jumpstarted 10 consecutive Ravens points to give them a 44-28 halftime lead. Windsor shot 26.5% through the first two quarters of play compared to Carleton's 48.5% efficiency.
After a slow start to the second-half, Windsor exploded offensively with an 11-2 run in the middle portion of the third quarter. Abdel-Gabar, Osuntola Jr. and
Josh Collins sunk consecutive three-pointers, bringing a once comfortable Carleton lead down to single digits at the 4:54 mark of the third quarter.
Following a Ravens timeout, Thomas Scrubb drained a three and followed that with a running floater for two more to push the lead back up to 14. Diloreto concluded the third quarter with quick penetration for two points on the lay-in, and Windsor went into the final 10 minutes of play down by 13.
Diloreto continued his strong second-half performance with a three from the upper corner early in the final period. The London, Ont. native caught the Ravens in transition a couple of possessions later, sneaking behind the defence for a quick transition lay-up.
Abdel-Gabar then came to life for the Lancers, notching two free throws before hitting a three in an effort to spring a Lancer comeback. But two quick lay-ups from Churchill in response allowed the Ravens to maintain their lead.
Another three-point basket by the two-time CIS player of the year Phillip Scrubb helped put the contest out of reach, as the Lancers substituted their starters with around two minutes remaining to begin preparations for Saturday's crucial OUA bronze medal contest.
The Lancers finished with a shooting efficiency of 32.8%, while the Ravens were 43.1% from the floor. The glass battle was tight, as Carleton pulled down 37 boards while Windsor tallied 36 rebounds on the night.
Saturday's bronze-medal contest tips off at 4:00 p.m. at Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre, and the game will be available live on Sportsnet One.
