Windsor loses heartbreaker to Marauders

Box Score TORONTO- The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 93-89 overtime decision to the McMaster Marauders in the OUA bronze-medal match on Saturday night at the Wilson Cup Final Four, hosted by Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The Marauders clinch the final OUA berth in next weekend's CIS Final 8 national championship in the nation's capital. For the second-straight season, the Lancers fell just short in their OUA Wilson Cup Final Four weekend finale, and their CIS hopes now rest on a single wild-card entry to be determined by the end of the weekend.

Rotimi Osuntola Jr. notched a game-high 23 points and added 11 rebounds to record a double-double and lead Windsor offensively. Fifth-year seniors Josh Collins, Lien Phillip and Enrico Diloreto all hit double-digits in possibly their final game wearing the blue and gold, adding 17, 14 and 11 respectively. Phillip, who was named the OUA West player of the year for the second-straight season, added eight rebounds in the loss.

Trevon McNeil notched a team-best 23 points off the bench for the Marauders, while Leon Alexander added 21 points.

The Lancers used seven-straight points to take an early lead in the contest. Diloreto found Osuntola Jr. on a fast-break, setting up the third-year for an alley-oop dunks that Osuntola finished with authority. Collins nailed a three-point jumper a possession later, but Taylor Black led a Marauders surge with a three of his own, as the West division regular season winners went up by one midway through the period.

Both sides continued to their athleticism throughout the opening quarter. Osuntola finished a high pass from Khalid Abdel-Gabar, capping off a strong opening quarter for the hometown native. After the teams exchanged quick turnovers, Alexander took advantage of an open lane, driving for a thundering dunk. Phillip's jumper with time running down ended the opening period with the West rivals deadlocked 20-20.

Windsor's offence exploded early in the second quarter, as the Lancers went on a 10-3 run. Some strong passing led to another Osuntola dunk, prompting a timeout from the Marauders with just over seven minutes left in the half.

After McMaster put together a small run out of the break, Diloreto went to work in the paint, using his quickness to draw a couple of Marauders fouls. Mike Rocca then drained a contested corner three, and Alex Campbell earned a three-point play with a strong move to the basket down the middle, maintaining a five-point Windsor lead.

Phillip grabbed his own rebound and banked it in off the glass late in the half, restoring Windsor's 10-point advantage. McMaster was able to slightly cut into the lead, as the Lancers went into halftime up 43-36.

Osuntola drained a three to open the second half, but the Marauders awoke from their slumber, going on a 7-0 run to make it a one-possession contest. Evan Matthews answered with a two-handed slam on a pass from Osuntola.

The Marauders persevered, bringing Windsor's lead back down to one. Collins drained a tough three with time winding down to help Windsor stay ahead, but that was short-lived as seven straight points from the Marauders polished off with an Aaron Redpath three-pointer gave them their first lead since the opening period.

However, Collins came to life for Windsor, as the fifth-year veteran drained back-to-back three's to quickly move the Lancers back on top. They would take a 61-60 lead into the final quarter.

Abdel-Gabar notched a three-point play early in the fourth, as Windsor stretched the lead to seven. However, the Marauders continued to chip away, as a tough running lay-up by Alexander brought Windsor's lead back down to two.

However, every time McMaster looked as though it would catch up, the Lancers had an answer. Osuntola tallied another dunk, and Abdel-Gabar knocked down two free throws.

After Alexander brought the lead down to a single point once again with under a minute to play and following a Lancers turnover, McNeill drained a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to give the Marauders a two-point lead.

However, after a missed three from Diloreto, Collins jumped on the rebound and was fouled with 0.7 seconds left. The Toronto native stepped to the foul line with ice in his veins, draining both his shots to send the game into overtime.

However, McMaster jumped out to an early lead in the extra period, as Adam Presutti heated up from beyond the arc, draining a couple of long-rangers to help the Marauders build an advantage. Windsor responded with a three from Osuntola and free throws by Collins and Diloreto. However, the guards both missed three-point attempts with time winding down, and the Lancers could not make up the deficit, falling by four points in the extra frame.

The Lancers shot 45.6% from the field compared to 40.7% from McMaster, and outrebounded the Marauders 41-38. Windsor committed 27 turnovers while McMaster surrendered the ball on 17 occasions.
