Lancers look to claim fifth OUA title on Saturday

WINDSOR, Ont.- One week out from going for their fourth straight CIS championship title, the Windsor Lancers women's basketball team will be aiming for a banner of different colours on Saturday evening when they host the Queen's Gaels at the St. Denis Centre in the OUA women's basketball championship, presented by ArcelorMittal Dofasco.

The CIS No. 1 ranked Lancers will be playing in their sixth straight conference finals and are looking to add a fifth OUA title to their program's trophy case. Windsor reclaimed the provincial banner last year after falling to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in 2011-12 and had won the conference title three-straight times beforehand.

The women are on a current playoff winning streak of 11 games dating back to that OUA Finals defeat two years ago, and boast an overall post-season mark of 30-4 from their first conference championship year in 2008-09 to last Saturday's 86-58 win over Laurier in the OUA West finals.

Windsor heads into Saturday's championship match after having five team members honoured by the OUA this past week. Head Coach Chantal Valle earned her fourth OUA West coach of the year award after leading the women to a sparkling 21-1 regular season record.

Fifth-year stalwarts Jessica Clemencon and Miah-Marie Langlois were named OUA first-team all-stars for the third consecutive year.

Clemencon, who has been on the conference's first-team list in all five of her star-studded years with the Lancers, led the team in scoring with 18.2 points per game, ranking her eighth in the CIS. She was third in the CIS with 26.1 points scored per 40 minutes, and was fourth in the nation with 152 total field goals in conference play.

Langlois was named the West defensive player of the year for the third-straight occasion, and ranked first in the CIS with 83 total steals and was second in the nation with a 2.9 assist to turnover ratio. Langlois was sixth in the country with 108 assists, and averaged 15.3 points per game.

Korissa Williams garnered second-team honours for the second-straight season, ranking third in team scoring with 14.3 points per game. Williams led Lancer guards and was ranked 18th in the CIS with a 48.2% field-goal percentage.

Rookie Cheyanne Roger earned OUA all-rookie honours after finishing second in the nation and first amongst CIS rookies with a total of 43 blocks on the season. The Etobicoke, Ont. native garnered 5.4 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game while averaging 17.5 minutes played per contest.

Queen's will look to claim its first OUA championship since the 2000-01 season, and is on a nine-game winning streak coming into Saturday's match-up with Windsor. The No. 10 Gaels used a strong second-half, going 10-3 in January and February, to climb to the top of the OUA East by the end of regular season play.

The Gaels are led by Liz Boag and Jenny Wright. Wright averaged a team-high 13.0 points per game, while Boag notched a career-high 77 assists this season while shooting 37.8% from beyond the arc.

Queen's topped Carleton, the only team to defeat Windsor in conference play in 2013-14, 62-58 in overtime last Saturday to book a spot in the OUA Final as well as the CIS Final 8 national championships taking place next weekend at the St. Denis Centre.

The Lancers recorded an 82-56 win over Queen's at home on November 9 in the only meeting between the teams this year.

Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be available live online at GoLancers.TV.
