Box Score The No. 9 ranked Lancer men's hockey team has earned a berth to the CIS national championships with a 6-2 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in game two of the OUA West division final.
Â
The victory gave Windsor a series sweep over the Thunderwolves, and advances them not only to the national tournament for the first time since 1999, but also to the OUA Championship Queen's Cup next weekend.
Â
Defenceman
Kenny Bradford netted the winner, rifling a shot through traffic that beat Jeff Bosch, the power play goal coming at 6:56 of the second period.
Â
The Thunderwolves took a two goal lead by the mid-way point of the first period. The Lancers, however, erased that deficit in a hurry, scoring two goals just 15 seconds apart to tie the game heading into the first intermission.
Â
Just 52 seconds after Kelin Ainsworth cut across the Windsor net and beat goalie
Parker Van Buskirk for a 2-0 Lakehead,
Julian Luciani blasted a rocket from just inside the point that Thunderwolves net-minder Jeff Bosch never saw as it raced just under the crossbar.
Â
Off the ensuing face-off the Lancers cruised back into Lakehead territory and
Evan Stibbard promptly scored his second of the post season at 13:12.
Â
Up 3-2 with Bradford's goal,
Mac McDonnell slipped the puck past Bosch at 17:07 of the second, just nine seconds into a Lancer power play.
Blake Blondeel then added Windsor's third goal of the period with 1:20 to go.
Â
In a tighter third period, Windsor's
Matt Beaudoin added an empty netter with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to secure the Lancer victory.
Â
Van Buskirk was outstanding in net turning aside 28 of 30 shots, while the Blue & Gold went 2-for-5 on the power play.
Â
Windsor now awaits the result of the Carleton/McGill series to determine their opponent in the Queen's Cup. Stay tuned to
