Lancers top Huskies, take on McGill for CIS title

Box Score QUEBEC CITY, Que.- Korissa Williams scored a game-high 24 points, and the Windsor Lancers women's basketball team booked their ticket to the CIS gold medal game with a 75-61 semifinal victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday night at the ArcellorMittal Dofasco CIS Women's Basketball Final 8 championships.

The fifth-year senior was 8-of-18 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line, and picked up a double-double, adding 12 rebounds, five steals and five assists to her stat sheet. Second-year Cheyanne Roger added 16 points and eight boards, while Kristine LaLonde notched 12 points and six assists.

Laura Dally had a team-best 22 points in a losing cause for the Huskies, who will take on the UBC Thunderbirds for the CIS bronze and Canada West bragging rights on Sunday morning.

A quick three from the Huskies to begin the contest energized the rowdy green following, however the Lancers responded with some stingy defence throughout the rest of the opening quarter. After Williams converted a mid-range jumper, LaLonde put the Lancers in front with a three-pointer. A few minutes later, Caitlyn Longmuir drained a three after some quick passing from the Lancers thwarted the Saskatchewan defence. After another quick Lancer bucket in the post from Roger, Huskies bench-boss Lisa Thomaidis called timeout in an effort to stem the Windsor tide.

After allowing the Huskies to score the first basket of the game, a three by Riley Humbert at the 9:42 mark, Windsor clamped down on the defensive end, not surrendering a single field goal over the next seven minutes. The OUA champions would take a 20-8 lead into the second quarter.

LaLonde opened the second quarter with another three, this time from the deep corner, and Roger followed that with an athletic reverse lay-up just beyond the fingertips of Canada West all-star Dalyce Emerson. Two straight Huskies turnovers led to four more Lancer points, pushing the lead beyond 20.

The Saskatchewan offence came to life in the final minutes of the half, as a couple of jumpers from Laura Dally was followed by a strong penetration move from Humbert for two more points. LaLonde, however, continued to be money from beyond the arc, banking her fourth three of the half to put a stamp on the opening 20 minutes, which ended with the Lancers ahead 48-26.

Saskatchewan tried to set a fresh tone early in the second half, scoring six of the opening eight points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 18. Sophomore Emily Prevost made her presence felt in the low post, notching back-to-back lay-ups to help Windsor stymie the Huskies momentum. The Canada West finalists persevered, as Desarae Hogborg converted on her free throw for a three-point play after sinking a lay-up while being fouled.

Williams, however, heated up in the third, recording 10 points in the quarter to help maintain Windsor's healthy advantage, which they would maintain heading into the final period of play. LaLonde and Roger further solidified the spread, the former connecting to the latter on back-to-back possessions for four points in the post. Saskatchewan, though, showed signs of life in the final quarter, using a 10-2 streak through the middle portion of the fourth to pull within 12 points of the Lancers with a couple of minutes remaining in regulation. With the momentum seeming to switch ever so slightly, Longmuir put the final nail in the Huskies coffin with a three-pointer that put the game well out of reach, helping the women to a 20th straight CIS post-season victory.

The Lancers will look for a historic fifth-straight national banner on Sunday afternoon when they take on the RSEQ champions from McGill. The only other women's basketball team to claim five straight banners was Laurentian from 1975-79. The Lancers will try to do accomplish the same feat against a No. 3 McGill squad riding high after an overtime upset victory over the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds. The Martlets are making their first-ever appearance in a CIS final, while Windsor will be playing in its sixth-straight national championship final.

Sunday's gold medal game will be broadcasted live on Sportsnet 360 with coverage beginning at 1:00 p.m.
