Box Score The Lancer men's hockey team fell 3-1 to the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night in London.
Â
The loss moves the Lancers to 11-12-2 on the year to sit tied for fourth with Laurier in the west division, while the Mustangs break a five game losing streak and improve to 7-13-2 and move within three points of Waterloo for the final playoff spot.
Â
After a back and forth first period that saw the Mustangs outshoot the Lancers, Western took control of the play for the majority of the second frame. Just as a Western penalty seemed to tip things in the Lancers' favour, the Mustangs' sprung Matt Marantz with a breakout pass, who took it in alone and went high on the glove side of Lancer goaltender
Kris Joyce to put the home team up 1-0.
Â
Windsor responded early in the third when
Blake Blondeel picked up an errant Western pass in the neutral zone before scoring on the breakaway to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
The game didn't stay tied for long, however, as the Mustangs scored a little more than three minutes later to put them back in front. Western extended that lead just prior to the 11-minute mark after Jed Rusk stepped out of the penalty box and took a long pass to head on the breakaway, beating Joyce on the blocker side for the goal.
Â
Despite strong pressure from the Lancers late in the game with both a power play opportunity and the goalie pulled, the Mustangs maintained their lead and closed out the game with a 3-1 win.
Â
Joyce finished the game with 36 saves, while Mustangs goaltender Greg Dodd had 37 in the win.
Â
The Blue & Gold return home for their final regular season home game on Friday night when they host the Brock Badgers. Prior to the puck drop at 7:30pm, the Lancers will honour their graduating seniors in a pre-game presentation.
