After coming off a successful season, the Windsor Lancer women's soccer program are hungry for more. Advancing to the OUA Final Four in 2016 is not only a goal, but an expectation.
Â
The Lancers open up their regular season with a two game matchup at home. They take on the Guelph Griffins on Friday, August 25th at 6:00PM and the York Lions on Saturday, August 26th at 6:00PM.
Â
The women Lancers return all five of their OUA all-stars in 2017. OUA West Division MVP and U SPORTS all-Canadian
Abby Hunt will make an attempt to return to action after suffering a season ending injury last year. Fortifying the back, first-team all-star
Keely Baggio will direct the defense as dual sport all-star
Krystin Lawrence looks to improve on her terrific season in 2016, which saw her allow only 0.64 goals a game.
Â
Locals Guilia Barile and
Becca Fuerth earned OUA second-team all-star honors in 2016. Fuerth looks to improve on her 8 goals last season and find the back of the net more in the upcoming year.
Â
Captain Barile cannot wait to get the 2017 season underway. "We are all pretty excited about the upcoming season," she said. "Having our best result in program history last year with a lot of players returning, we know we can compete each and every game and have a chance to go on another run. I am really looking forward to getting back on the field with the team!"
Â
The upcoming season looks to be something special for the Lancers, who only graduated two players from last season's roster. Another year of experience under the young teams belt, and an impressive recruiting class coming into the season sparks excitement from women's head coach
Steve Hart. "We are very excited about our recruits coming in this year. It's unusual to have so many returning players mixed in with our solid recruits. It will give us the depth to our squad which we have needed."
Â
Local recruits and teammates Savannah Marra and Jade Samping look to bring their experience playing together onto Alumni Field. Coming in from the Toronto area, striker Sophia Ferrazzo looks to add goals in the upcoming season as she scored 20 goals in just 34 games with the North Toronto Nitros.
Â
Rounding out the rest of the recruits are defender Amanda Anger and midfielder Stephanie Turner.
Â
"After our second place finish in the OUA West last year, we have very high expectations for the upcoming season. The majority of the squad is returning, including three senior players who didn't play last season due to injury. With the addition of several talented recruits, I think we will be very competitive." – Head Coach,
Steve Hart
