Men's Soccer secures spot in the post season with win over Guelph

Box Score The Lancer men's soccer team put their hearts on the line this weekend as they battled for the final playoff spot in the OUA west division.

It all came down to their final game on Sunday following a tough 1-0 loss to the York Lions on Friday night at Alumni Field. The Blue & Gold gave it their all and came away with a 4-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons to secure their spot in the post season.

FRIDAY vs YORK
Both teams played aggressively with the Lions controlling the ball for the majority of the first half. Windsor struggled to keep up with the Lions, but when they did gain possession made those chances count. However, despite a number of scoring chances, including a penalty kick and three corners, the Lancers were unable to get on the scoreboard and went into the half tied 0-0.

The game continued to be back and forth until the 70th minute when York's Chris Jacovou scored the game's lone goal to give the Lions the lead and eventual win.

SUNDAY vs GUELPH
The game started off very physical but neither team was able to score on the few opportunities they had. Both teams went into the locker room at halftime, tied 0-0.

In the second, Kyle Ruggaber wasted to time getting the Lancers on the board in the 50th minute. The Lancers kept up the pressure and secured a second goal thank to Stephan Milidrag.

The Gryphons increased their intensity and squeaked through the Lancer defense to make it a one goal game in the 73rd minute. Compared to the first half, both teams were able to develop and utilize all opportunities to shoot the ball on goal.

Windsor sealed their fate in the post season late in the game with another pair of goals from Jamar Redhead and rookie Ard Dieker. Goaltender Greg Chac became a wall in net, stopping a number of Guelph opportunities to seal the victory.

Prior to the game the Lancers honoured their graduating seniors and the Blue & Gold would like to thank them for their hard work and dedication as members of the Lancer family.

UP NEXT
The Lancers will now head to London to face the Western Mustangs in the first round of the OUA playoffs on Wednesday, October 24th at 8:15pm.
