Being one of the youngest teams in the OUA for the second-year running hasn't stopped the Lancers from making a second consecutive appearance in the OUA playoffs.
Â
With a sixth-place finish in the OUA west division, the Lancers will face the third seed Brock Badgers in the first round of the post season on Wednesday in St. Catharine's, ON.
Â
Head coach
Ryan Mendonca returns to the post season with what he describes as a tight-knit, young, dynamic and hungry group of players as the blue and gold will look to do more than simply make an appearance.
Â
"Our bond is incredible," explained Mendonca. "I don't think there's a closer group that works harder…our strength is our belief in one another."
Â
In addition to the tight bond and having been to the playoffs before as a team, this year's squad is not happy with just making the post season, they know there is more to be done.
Â
With the Lancers set to be a young team for the foreseeable future, Mendonca is astounded with the way his team has performed. "I don't think a lot of people that pegged us as contenders," said Mendonca. "When they are this young, you're not expecting this. What these boys bring to the table is tremendous."
Â
In order to advance to the quarter-finals, the Lancers will have to end the Brock Badgers season and the blue and gold love what their team brings to the matchup.
Â
Windsor has a great core on defense with
Cameron Anger,
Jackson Moy,
Nathan Clemmings and
Kyle Buren anchoring the unit. Mendonca also couldn't help but praise his third-year goal tender
Kaneen Fells who Mendonca says does a fantastic job bringing energy and organizing the defense.
Â
Offensively, the Lancers have gone through a bit of a scoring drought but according to Mendonca, it's nothing to worry about. "When you're outshooting teams and making quality chances it's not too worrying," Mendonca said. "The guys joke that we're just saving them for the playoffs."
Â
The Lancers will have a chance to show what they've been saving October 23rd at 8:15 pm in St. Catharines.
