The Lancer men's volleyball team lost their first game of the season Saturday night with a 3-0 (20-25, 21-25, 20-25) loss to the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton, ON.
GAME STATS
Windsor had a balanced attack and were led by
Pierce Johnson and
Brad Gyemi with nine and seven kills, respectively.
Matt Passalent was outstanding for the host Marauders, putting up a game high 20 kills, while Craig Ireland also hit double digits with ten.
GAME FLOW
The Marauders came out strong and quickly built a 12-6 lead over the visiting Lancers. Windsor played catch-up for the entire set and was never able to string together a significant run until late in the game when the Marauders had already established control of the set.
In the second, Windsor re-grouped and the game went basically point-for-point right until the end when the hosts pulled up their socks and scored the final four points to take the set with a service ace from Passalent.
In the third, Windsor once again kept the game close and eventually took the lead for the first time that night. The Marauders, however, would not back down and the teams eventually traded points again for the remainder of the set. With the game on the line, McMaster once again closed out the set with a service ace, this time from Ireland, to take the set and the game.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH
"Teams are geared up and bringing their A game when they see us so we need to answer that bell every time out," said head coach
James Gravelle. "Even though we didn't have our best stuff tonight the boys battled, and we had good chances, in sets 2 and 3 especially, that we let slip. Hats off to McMaster who played well and deserved to win."
