Offensive lineman Drew Desjarlais made University of Windsor Lancers' history on Thursday.
The 22-year-old Desjarlais became the highest selection ever for a member of the Lancers' football team in the Canadian Football League Draft. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers took him in the first round with the fourth pick overall.
"(Former Lancers head coach Joe) D'Amore told me I was going to set a school record, so that's cool," the six-foot-three, 310-pound Desjarlais said.
Prior to Desjarlais being selected on Thursday, the highest a Lancer had ever been selected was in 1969 when John Robinson was taken 11th overall by Montreal.
"I had a feeling about Winnipeg taking me since the (March CFL) Combine," Desjarlais said. "They were my first interview at the combine and it went pretty well. They showed some film of a couple of my pancake blocks."
While the draft was going on Thursday, Desjarlais was in New York and will participate in rookie camp for the NFL Giants starting on Friday. He will attend rookie camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers next week.
"We got back to the hotel around 7:30 p.m. and started watching it," Desjarlais said of the draft. "It's nice to have it over now.
"I'll enjoy it for tonight and get back to the Giants (Friday)," Desjarlais said.
