Box Score The rain cleared and the clouds parted just at the Windsor Lancer women's soccer team took the pitch Friday evening. Unfortunately, the clear skies did not help the Lancers as they dropped a 5-0 decision to the Guelph Gryphons at Alumni Field.
Â
After a tightly contested first half, the Lancers had no answers for the Gryphons attack in the second half. The loss moves the Lancers to 1-3-1 on the season as the team hits the road to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday.
Â
Things didn't start great for the Lancers as Guelph applied pressure early. The Gryphons couldn't convert two corner kicks but jumped out to a lead in the 13th minute when Alana MacLean found herself alone in front and buried it from 20 yards out. Following the goal the game was a defensive match, with both teams working hard in the midfield to try and create a chance. The Gryphons kept the pressure up but Lancer goalkeeper
Lauren Gellner held strong in the net. Windsor finally generated some good possession in the attacking zone late, but couldn't cash in, settling for a 1-0 deficit at halftime.
Â
In the second half the Gryphons pushed hard on the attack but Gellner made two outstanding saves to keep the blue and gold in the game. Unfortunately for the Lancers the Gryphons attack finally converted, and in rapid fashion. Victoria Hinchcliffe scored a sharp angle shot on an empty net after beating Gellner in the 67th minute. In the 68th minute Kaylin Twardowski hammered one home, shortly before Hinchcliffe converted a penalty kick to put her Gryphons up 4-0 midway through the second half. Then, in the 77th minute, Hinchcliffe scored her third goal on the day . The Lancers couldn't break through, dropping the game 5-0.
