Lancers dominate Thunderbirds; sweep weekend series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Windsor Lancers swept the Algoma Thunderbirds in their first two home games of the season. The Lancers followed up their dominant 4-0 win on their home opener Saturday night with a more dominant 6-0 win on Sunday.

Tanner Page scored in both games to move the blue and gold to 2-1-1 on the young OUA Soccer season.

SATURDAY
The Lancers kicked off their home opener in dominant fashion at Alumni Field. Page got things going just 11 minutes into the game, beating Isaac Lucas to put the Lancers ahead 1-0 early. The game then settled into a defensive match with neither side giving up ground or opportunities. Page's goal remained the only difference between the teams heading at halftime as the Lancers took the 1-0 lead into the locker room.

Despite the defensive nature of the first half, the Lancers opened the floodgates in the second half. Jonathan Agapito scored in the 65th minute and just three minutes later it was Bryce Phillips, who was subbed on for Page, on a penalty kick. The two quick goals left the Thunderbirds searching for answers with the 70-minute mark approaching. With the Thunderbirds searching for answers the Lancers found the back of the net when Johnathan Agapito scored in the 75th minute to put Windsor up 4-0. The Lancers defense was so locked in they hardly allowed a shot all game, let alone in the waning moments, taking their home opener 4-0.

SUNDAY
The second leg of the back to back opened with the Lancers dominating the possession but failing to score a goal despite a few nice chances early. The blue and gold offense kept the pressure up though and in the 14th minute, Page was able to get his boot on a nice rebound and put it past the keeper for the early 1-0 lead. Just minutes later it was Page again, doubling the Lancers lead.

The fireworks kept coming as shortly thereafter, as Paul Di Meo was able to re-direct a nice pass through the Algoma goal for a 3-0 lead before the 20th minute. In the 28th minute Di Meo scored again to put the Lancers up 4-0, which was the score at halftime.

The blue and gold came out of the second half still pushing the ball and attacking on offense. In the 48th minute the Lancers scored again, with Thomas Saba's first OUA career goal that put Windsor up 5-0 early in the second half. In the 74th minute the Lancers attack struck again as Ard Dieker made the score 6-0 late in the game. The Windsor defense earned their second straight shutout as they cruised past the Thunderbirds 6-0.
