Windsor splits doubleheader with Algoma

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancer women's soccer team and the visiting Algoma Thunderbirds split their weekend series in the border city. After dominating the Thunderbirds 5-0 in their season home opener, the Lancers couldn't keep the defensive intensity and lost the rematch 4-1 on Sunday.

This weekend's action moves the Lancers to 1-2-1 on the season.

SATURDAY
The Lancers came out with a stringent defense in their home opener Saturday night as the visiting Thunderbirds struggled to break through and create opportunities. The Lancers did a good job early in turning their defense into offense, breaking through the Algoma defense and getting shots on goal. Grace Melick got the blue and gold on the board early, scoring her first OUA career goal in the 10th minute.  Jessica Paglia followed suit just 15 minutes later putting the Lancers up 2-0. In the 30th minute, Paglia scored again and after forty-five, the Lancers lead 3-0.

Algoma continued to struggle to contain the Lancer attack in the second half. In the 56th minute Tiffany Davies was subbed in and quickly made an impact, putting the Lancers up 4-0.  Ancika Quimbly scored for the Lancers in the 75th minute and with the Thunderbirds unable to create quality opportunities, they were held off the board in a 5-0 decision in favour of the hosts.

SUNDAY
The Thunderbirds pressured the Lancers early forcing Lauren Gellner to make a nice save. The two sides traded corners early and though neither could cash in, it took quite the effort from Gellner and the Lancers to keep the Thunderbirds off the board. In the 19th minute though the second-year keeper was beat by Kate Nippard as the visiting Thunderbirds took an early 1-0 lead. The Lancers continued to work offensively and were rewarded when Sophia Ferrazzo connected on a penalty kick to bring the game even in the 25th minute. Unfortunately for the blue and gold, Algoma was much more in tune offensively, scoring two more goals off the legs of Maria Demelo and Nippard again to go into the break up 3-1.

Early in the second half, both sides took turns trying to advance the ball and create an attack, though neither generated a goal. Finally, in the 77th minute someone broke through, though it was the Thunderbirds as Nippard netted her third goal of the match to put the visitors up 4-1 with time running out on a Lancers comeback bid. Windsor not able to create another chance and dropped the game 4-1.
