The University of Windsor women's basketball team is excited to announce the signing of another phenomenal local talent, Kaelyn Batten from LaSalle, Ontario.
Â
Batten is a 5'7", athletic point guard that will have an immediate impact when she joins the Lancers for the 2022-23 season. An incredible athlete with a tall ceiling, Batten will bring her leadership and work ethic to the blue and gold immediately.
Batten is a multi-sport athlete who has competed for Villanova at both WECSAA and SWOSSAA in hockey and badminton, in addition to her many accolades as a basketball player. Batten first picked up a basketball in grade six playing for her grade school team before deciding to try her hand at travel ball, honing her skills as a young player with the South Windsor Warriors.
Â
From there, she moved on to compete with the Windsor Valiants in addition to making the senior girl's squad at Villanova. Kaelyn was honoured as a junior girls all-star in 2018 and was named athlete of the year in grade 9 and 10 at Villanova. 2019 was a banner year for the young, stalwart point gurard as she helped the Valiants JUEL Prep team capture a silver and lead her Villanova Wildcats squad to WECSAA gold.
Coach Vallée could not be more excited to add an athlete of Batten's calibre to the Lancer squad. "I am thrilled to add another superb local basketball player to our line-up. I have watched Kaelyn play since she was in grade 10 and she was competing with and leading grades 11 and 12," Vallée said. "Immediately I noticed her ability to see the floor and pass. She is an excellent point guard that can also defend hard and has a great scoring ability. I am thrilled that Kaelyn chose us amongst the many opportunities she had in front of her. She will enhance our team play instantly!"
An honour roll student throughout her years at Villanova, Batten will be studying Movement Science in the Faculty of Human Kinetics this fall.
Â
Growing up in Windsor-Essex, Batten spoke to the impact that Lancers women's basketball had on her as a young athlete. "I also always looked up to this team and program. Growing up here, watching the games, it's really a dream come true playing here. This is the best place for me to be not only a successful basketball player, but to also become the best person and student I can. I'm so thankful for this opportunity and so excited for what's to come in the next few years!"
Â
"I couldn't find a reason not to choose Windsor," says Batten. "It feels like the perfect place for me. The basketball program is one of the best in the country and the players and coaches welcomed me right away. The more I get to know about this program, the more I know I made the right decision coming to Windsor."
