With a sixth-place finish in the OUA west division, the Lancers qualified for the post season for the first time since 2016 and will face the third seeded Guelph Gryphons in the first round of the post-season on Wednesday, October 26th at 6:00pm in Guelph, ON.
Â
After a tough loss to the Western Mustangs last year to end their regular season, the blue and gold came looking for redemption this year. The Lancers are full of energy and with a strong finish in the regular season, the playoffs are encouraging them to be peaking at the right time.
Â
"We are going to continue to lean into our core values of being brave, bole, resilient, authentic, vulnerable and resilient," said head coach
Daniel Mendonca when asked about their focus heading into the post-season. "Our bravery is reflected on the field in the way we compete and battle regardless of the opponent."
Â
In order to advance to the quarter-finals, the Lancers will need to defeat the Guelph Gryphons and the squad is prepared to bring the energy and show-off what they've been working so hard on throughout the season to come to this moment.
Â
"Our seniors are providing a strong foundation for us as a team to be ourselves and express who we are through accountability and resilience," explains Mendonca. "They continue to push us through to elevate our play. Our leadership council of Lauren, Grace, Kat, Brooke, Alexa and Haley are pushing us to success."
Â
There is an emphasis on the team mentality and each player's ability to step up when it is time. On the defense, Brook Macleod describes the one word used to describe what will drive the team's success is bravery. "As a team we have continually used the word brave, as well as demonstrated a lot of bravery throughout this season.?? Our team feels very excited and happy, as this is something we have worked really hard for."
Â
"We have played every team close this year, and believe we can beat anyone and are up for the challenge," states Mendonca. The Lancers know they will have to push hard to qualify for the next round of the playoffs but the familiarity of facing the Gryphons gives them the confidence to respond with the extra edge.
