Women's Basketball announces recruiting class

Lancer women's basketball head coach Chantal Vallée is excited to announce the recruiting class of 2023-24. Among the talent are local standout Leah Tate, transfer student Kira Atherly, and Corunna, ON native Teighan Stoukas.

Leah Tate, a local talent from Holy Names Catholic High School, joins the Lancers with many accolades throughout her basketball career. Tate, a 5'10 guard, had many NCAA offers to play soccer but she turned them down to play basketball for the blue and gold. Tate was also awarded the Royal Arcanum award for large schools as WECSSAA's top female athlete with co-MVP honours for the Knights and named a first-team all-star in her final year of high school.

Vallée has made comparisons between Tate and a young Miah Marie-Langlois when it comes to their strengths and playing styles. "I think she can be an all-star, an all-Canadian and possibly a professional, if that what she chooses to do," commented Vallée about Tate. "Some of our best players have come from other sports like Raelyn Prince (hockey) and Bojana Kovacivic and Jocelyn Laroque (soccer). Leah will be one that will surprise our community with her skills on the floor as I expect her to contribute right away."

Kira Atherly, a transfer student from St. Francis Xavier University, decided to come back and play in her hometown after two years in Nova Scotia. Atherly, a 5'9 forward who used to play on the Windsor St. Clair JUEL prep team, is transferring into the Environmental Science program at the University of Windsor.

Vallee is thrilled to have local talent returning home to suit up for the blue and gold and has said "I have known Kira since she as in High school and to get another local commitment, and with two years of university experience under her belt, is tremendous. We will count on her exemplary hard work and defensive tenacity, as well as her offensive athleticism, to help lead our squad."

Teighan Stoukas, a 5'6 point guard from the Corunna area, will be joining the Lancers and studying Human Kinetics in the fall. Stoukas has many achievements throughout her time in the sport including basketball MVP in all 4 years of high school and MVP in multiple tournaments throughout her career. When asked about why she wanted to join the Lancers, Stoukas stated "choosing to attend the University of Windsor was easy due to the inviting and competitive atmosphere."

Vallee is excited to see Teighan's contributions to the team. "We were looking for a point guard for a long time, so we are thrilled that Teighan decided to commit. She has the leadership qualities and skills of a leader for this team.  The fans will see a tenacious guard that is coachable and can shoot the trey."
