Seven Windsor Lancers were honoured at the 17th annual WESPY Awards on Tuesday night at the Caboto Club in Windsor.
The WESPY Awards recognize outstanding local athletes for their success and contribution to their respective sports. The awards were based on the athletes' accomplishments during the 2023 calendar year.
The Lancers swept the track & field category as
Nojah Parker and
Mandy Brunet claimed the Dennis Fairall track & field award. During the 2022-23 season, Brunet had a fantastic season as she went undefeated in the women's triple jump claiming gold at both the OUA & U SPORTS championships, while also claiming silver in the long jump at provincials and was named the Lancers Banner Sheild recipient as female athlete of the year. Nojah also had a great year, placing fourth overall at the OUA & U SPORTS championships in the men's pole vault.
Brunet was also named the WESPY Awards overall female athlete of the year.
Thomas Kennedy was named the male basketball athlete of the year for the second straight year, while Leah Tate received the award on the women's side for her season year with Holy Names High School.
On the ice,
Kristen Swiatoschik was named the female Ed Jovanovski hockey player of the year for the second straight year for her standout play during the 2022-23 season, Lancer soccer all-star Frankie Facchineri received the male soccer award, and former Lancer Zach Albert was awarded the Tim Hommel male volleyball award.
Longtime Lancer track & field official Leo Shapiro was also named the Knobby Knudsen Volunteer of the Year for his tremendous contributions to the community.
