With a shared emphasis on tactical evolution and team cohesion, Lancer women's and men's soccer head coaches
Daniel Mendonca and Demetri Vacratsis are gearing up to make a strong statement in the 2024 OUA season.
Â
The fall 2024 schedule features the Lancers competing in a series of twelve matches against eight different opponents. Teams will first take the stage on the road against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, August 31st at 1:00pm (W) and 3:15pm (M). The blue and gold will then return to Alumni Stadium for their home opener against the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday, September 1st at 2:00pm (W) and 4:15pm (M).
Â
The women's roster has been bolstered by the addition of 10 new players this cycle, creating a depth and dynamism not seen in recent years. Head coach
Daniel Mendonca highlights the successful integration of these new players during the pre-season and is inspired by the group's ambition and focused approach. "We have a unique dynamic that has been energetic," said Mendonca. "We are willing to work on the small details and push for perfection."
Â
Fans should watch for last years' standout freshman, Olivia Corazza and
Claire Pozzi, as well as transfers
Mikayla Talbot and
Machin Chau, who are expected to have an immediate presence on the field as they don the blue and gold.
Â
Mendonca acknowledges the growing support from the Lancer family, noting, "their cheers and support will help us climb higher during our season peaks and fight through the inevitable valleys in games. Family, friends, alumni and the community at large are what push us forward."
Â
The team has been competitive with the top squads in the OUA over the past two seasons and aims to build on that success this year. "We are a group with a common goal and belief in their values and process," Mendonca said with confidence. "We are excited to get started and battle it out on August 31st."
MEN'S PREVIEW
The men's team aims to redefine their defensive and attacking identity on the pitch this season. As the youngest team in the OUA, with nearly a 50% change in roster from last season, the spotlight is sure to be on the influx of new talent. Key newcomers with MLS Next experience, such as forward Nico Fontecha, midfielder JC Maida, and defender Spencer Krause, are expected to make an immediate impact.
Â
Vacratsis also underscores the crucial role of returning players for the upcoming season. Evan Vacratsis, back from a knee injury, is showing impressive form. Skyler Pinnock is also set to play a pivotal role, showcasing some of his best soccer yet. Additionally, Vacratsis highlights the leadership of senior goalkeeper Simon Grande. "A huge part of the team is the heart and talent of Simon Grande," noted Vacratsis. "He leads in many ways and was a stalwart for us last season."
Â
With a unified focus on their strategic process and support from the Lancer family, Vacratsis anticipates a rewarding season. "The returning players have worked extremely hard in the off-season to push themselves to a new level," Vacratsis said. "The incoming Lancers, which are a crop of talent, are just as excited and eager to up their game and achieve something fresh and new."
