Lancer Football falls to McMaster 15-14 in overtime in home finale

The Lancer Football team was defeated 15-14 in overtime by the McMaster Marauders on a bizarre final play on Saturday night on Alumni Field in Windsor.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 2-5 on the season.

On a frigid Saturday evening in Windsor, the Lancers opened up the scoring early in the second quarter with a 23 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Malian to Cory Fernandes to go ahead 7-0 .

The Marauders fought back later in the quarter as they recovered a Lancer fumble that led to a 21 yard touchdown pass to Mathew Peressini to tie the game at 7-7.

Lancer quarterback Sam Malian was injured again in the second quarter and was replaced by Greg Orsini who came in and took over the Lancer offense.

McMaster would then take their first lead of the game on a 1 yard run by Jordan Kozina to give the visitors a 14-7 advantage at the half.

The second half was a hard fought defensive battle as the Lancer defense elevated their game and forced 5 turnovers in the second half alone.

From there, the Lancers engineered a long drive which was led by quarterback Greg Orsini and capped off by a 1 yard run from Derek Hymers to even up the score 14-14 with 8:43 remaining in the game.

Neither team was able to put together a game-winning drive near the end of regulation time as it finished 14-14 and the game headed for overtime.

With each team getting a possession on the opposition's 35-yard line, the Lancers opened up overtime and were picked off on their first play, giving the Marauders a chance to seal the victory.

With McMaster then getting their chance on offense, a strange sequence would follow. After advancing the ball forward, the Marauders had numerous chances to punt the ball through the end zone for a rouge and the victory, but chose not to.

The Marauders continued to try and run the ball before finally deciding to kick a field goal. What followed was one of the strangest endings to a football game in recent history.

The Lancers stepped up and blocked the field goal and then recovered the ball and carried it all the way down the field for what seemed to be the game winning touchdown and one of the wildest endings ever.

However, the Lancers were called for a block to the rear in the endzone, which negated the touchdown run back and gave the Marauders a single point to end the game.

For Windsor, Greg Orsini finished the game 9 of 17 passing for 89 yards. Kamar Anglin carred the ball 10 times for 64 yards while Nick Baldassi caught 5 passes for 76 yards.

The Lancers will now close out their season against the Ottawa Gee Gees on October 24th in Ottawa at 1pm.
