Matt Morencie captures J.P. Metras Award as OUA Lineman of the Year

Matt Morencie has been named the OUA's Lineman of the Year
The Windsor Lancers are pleased to announce that Lancer Football centre Matt Morencie has been awarded the prestigious OUA J.P. Metras Award as the 2009 Lineman of the Year.

The award was announced along with other OUA major awards by the OUA on Thursday afternoon.

A native of Windsor, Ontario and the 21st overall selection in last May's CFL entry draft, Morencie returned to Windsor for his fifth and final season in 2009.

A career offensive tackle, Morencie made a huge switch this season to the interior of the offensive line to take on the role of centre.

He flourished in his new role that saw him in charge of making the calls and adjustments for the offensive line.

As a physical point-of-attack run blocker and a high quality pass protector, Morencie was once again one of the league's most dominant offensive linemen this season.

He'll look to move on to the next level in 2010 after recently signing with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

He is the third member in University of Windsor history to win the J.P. Metras Award and the first since John Celestino in 1981.

Morencie is also a nominee for the CIS J.P. Metras Trophy as top lineman in Canada.

In other OUA major awards, Western quarterback Michael Faulds was named the OUA Most Valuable Player. A fifth year senior, Faulds set the CIS career passing record with 10,811 yards and he will be the OUA nominee for the Hec Crighton Award as Canadian Player of the Year.
