Box Score 2 The Lancer men's volleyball team split a pair of weekend games with the Guelph Gryphons and Waterloo Warriors on the weekend.
Windsor was defeated in straight sets by the Gryphons in Guelph before defeating the visiting Waterloo Warriors in five sets on Sunday at the St. Denis Centre.
On Friday in Guelph, the first set featured short rallies and a close score throughout. The Gryphons ended up taking a lead near the end of the set en route to the 25-21 win.
During the second set, the Lancers were outplayed by the Gryphons as they struggled to return the ball against Guelph's strong offensive attack. Justin Kuskoff helped keep the Lancers alive with his solid spikes, however it was not enough as the Gryphons won 25-19.
In the third set, Windsor showed a more consistend attack as they responded to the pressure being put on them by the visitors.
At one point in the game, Windsor had tied up the set 14-14, before Guelph's Andrew Bartram helped build the Gryphon lead with two consecutive solid spikes.
Lancer Will Alexander tried to save his team with some excellent defensive digs but it was to no avail as the Gryphons took the final set 25-18 and won the match.
On Sunday, the Lancers hosted the Waterloo Warriors in their final home match of the first semester.
Windsor came away with the hard fought win, defeating the Warriors in five tough sets 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 15-13).
Against Waterloo, the Lancers took an early lead in set one before the visitors responded with some solid play for a 5-point lead of their own.
Some aggressive play and power hits from Kyle Williamson and Justin Kuskoff allowed Windsor to bring the score to within one, 24-23. In the nail biting final moments of the first set, Waterloo came away with a big kill to seal the win.
Play was tight in set two as well with both teams showing their skill on the offensive side of the net.
More hitting from Kuskoff and Williamson made the Windsor attack difficult to control, as the home team broke the stalemate, pulling ahead by two. A final hit by Williamson ended the game 25-23 in favour of the Lancers.
While set three play went back and fourth, it wasn't long before the Lancers took control. A key hit and block by Shane Byrne as well as some Waterloo mistakes gave Windsor a three point lead.
The Lancers quickly turned three into seven and cruised for the remainder of the game, winning 25-16.
The Warriors responded in set four with some excellent blocking and defensive play to shut down the powerful Lancers offense that dominated in the previous two sets. Final score for set four was 25-17 in favour of Waterloo.
In the deciding set, after falling behind early,the Lancers were able to tie it up at 11-11 with some solid offensive play. points.
An out of bounds block put the Lancers in position to win it. Sitting at 14-13, a powerful hit from Williamson caught the Warriors off guard and earned the Lancers the hard fought 3-2 match victory.

Windsor will now break for the holidays before returning to the court on January 15th when they open the new year against the Waterloo Warriors on the road in Waterloo.
