The Lancer Football team will kick off their 2010 season at home with a special Tuesday night opener on August 31st against the Ottawa Gee Gees. Game time is set for 7pm at Alumni Field.
The revised schedule was announced earlier this week by the OUA in response to the University of Waterloo's suspension of its football program for the 2010 season. The league has updated its original schedule to ensure competitive balance among the nine remaining schools.
The original eight-week regular season schedule has been expanded to nine weeks with the Lancers enjoying a bye week for the games scheduled the week of October 2nd.
Windsor's home game against the Ottawa Gee Gees on Tuesday, August 31st will be the first OUA game of the regular season in 2010.
“We are really excited to host Ottawa, one of the top teams in our conference, in our home opener this year,” commented Lancer Football Head Coach Mike Morencie. “It's a unique opportunity to host on a Tuesday night as the league's first game and it should make for any exciting night of football for our fans and the community.”
The revised OUA schedule ensures that each team will face each other once during the regular season, with four home and four away games, while keeping the current playoff structure of two quarter-finals, two semi-finals and Yates Cup championship intact.
The top six teams make the post-season, with the top two teams earning byes into the semi-finals. Teams playing Waterloo in the original schedule will now receive byes on those weeks.
The Lancers will open their training camp on Friday, Aug. 20, with medicals for student-athletes taking place the day before.
The OUA quarter-finals will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30 followed by the OUA semi-finals on Saturday, Nov. 6. The OUA football season concludes at the 103rd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums on Saturday, Nov. 13.
