Box Score The Lancer Football team was defeated 30-15 by the visiting Western Mustangs on Saturday night in front of 2,566 fans at Alumni Field in Windsor.
With the loss, the Lancers fall to 1-3 in conference play.
On Saturday night, both offences struggled to find their rhythm early in a low scoring opening quarter. Windsor's
Matt Bucknor intercepted a pass on the Mustangs opening drive to give the home team some early confidence.
The visitors would eventually get on the board first with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter on a 77-yard drive which was capped off by a 12-yard touchdown run by Western's Jeremy Hipperson.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs began to move the ball as quarterback Donnie Marshall led his team to another scoring drive. This time it was a 34-yard pass to receiver Zach Bull to make it 14-0. The pair would connect on another touchdown late in the half off of a 62-yard pass play with 30 seconds remaining to put the Mustangs ahead 21-1.
Windsor had trouble running the ball in the first half against the Mustangs, something which has troubled them early on this season.
After the break, Western's opening drive chewed up more than six minutes off the clock and was capped off with a 24-yard field goal by kicker Lirim Hajrullahu.
Lancer rookie quarterback
Austin Kennedy seemed to find his rhythm late in the third quarter as he connected with receiver
Cory Fernandes on a 49-yard touchdown strike to cut the lead to 27-9.
Western would add another field goal in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 30-9 in favour of the visitors.
The Lancers continued to battle and after
Jordan Brescacin recovered a fumble,
Austin Kennedy found
Jamal Darius on a two-yard dump pass for a touchdown. The score capped off a 58-yard drive by the Lancers and made the final score 30-15 for the Mustangs.
Kennedy, who played in place of injured starter
Sam Malian, finished 19 of 38 passing for 266 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The rookie quarterback also carried the ball 12 times for 88 rushing yards in his home debut.
Lancer receiver
Cory Fernandes caught four passes for 76 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown catch.
For the Mustangs, quarterback Donnie Marshall finished 12 of 26 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed the ball 15 times for 158 yards.
