Box Score The Lancer Football team dropped a heartbreaking, last minute thriller to the Ottawa Gee Gees 32-30 on Saturday afternoon in Ottawa.
With the loss, the Lancers now sit at 4-3 on the season, qualifying for a spot in the post season, but not finish high enough in the standings to host a home playoff game.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lancers opened up the scoring on a strange sequence early on. On the second play of the game, the Gee Gees mishandled the snap on their own four yard line, sending the ball into their own end zone. Ottawa then fumbled their own recovery, and the ball was recovered by Lancer linebacker
Ziad Elsayed for his first career touchdown.
Late in the first quarter, an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Ottawa defence brought the ball to the Ottawa three yard line.
After a two-yard drive by
Shomari Grant, Lancer quarterback
Austin Kennedy took the snap and leaped over the pile into the endzone to make the score 14-0 for Windsor.
Ottawa battled back in the second quarter in front of their home fans as they registered 20 unanswered points in the quarter to take a 20-17 lead at the half.
The Gee Gees got a pair of field goals early in the second quarter followed by an interception on the Lancer three yard line to bring the score within one at 14-13 with four minutes remaining in the half.
Two minutes later, Ottawa scored again to make it 20-14 and give the home team the six point lead.
Lancer rookie kicker
Sebastien Rimbert hit a 24 yard field goal on the last play of the first half to bring Windsor to within three, 20-17.
In the third quarter, Windsor would regain the lead five minutes in with a 40-yard scamper by receiver
Evan Pszczonak.
However, the lead did not last long as Ottawa retaliated with a 33-yard pass just a minute and a half later, which was followed up by Windsor conceding a safety on their next drive.
Momentum changed back into the Lancers favour at the start of the fourth, as
Josh Burns recovered an Ottawa fumble at the Lancer goal line.
Pszczonak put the Lancers back on top with an electrifying 77-yard pass run halfway through the final quarter to make the score 30-28.
From there, the game was back and forth with both teams on top of their game and fighting for every yard.
With two minutes remaining on the clock, the Gee Gees attempted a forty yard field goal, but fell just short putting the ball back in the Lancers possession.
With Windsor unable to capitalize on the drive, Ottawa took the ball back with just under a minute and a half on the clock, driving the ball to the three yard line and well within field goal range.
With only 19.9 seconds remaining on the clock, Ottawa's Matt Falvo waited out the clock and kicked a three yard field goal for the win.
Windsor quarterback
Austin Kennedy had another great game for the Lancers, finishing 17-for-27 and 270 yards passing and two touchdowns.
On the ground,
Shomari Grant had 47 rushing yards while
Evan Pszczonak had 130 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
The Lancers will round out the regular season next week on the road when they travel to Toronto to face the York Lions.
