Former Lancer Football great Daryl Stephenson has been signed by the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats, as announced today by the team.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Stephenson played 29 games over three seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after being selected in the third round (15th overall) of the 2008 CFL Canadian Draft.
"Daryl is a solid Canadian player who can contribute on special teams and add versatility to our offensive lineup," Tiger-Cats general manager Bob O'Billovich said in a release.
Prior to turning pro, the London, Ontario native enjoyed an illustrious Canadian Interuniversity Sport career at Windsor that saw him finish as Canadian University Football's all-time leading rusher with 5,163 yards. He is still the only player in CIS history to break the magical 5,000 rushing yard plateau.
In 2006, he captured the Hec Crighton trophy winner as the Canadian University's Most Outstanding Player after leading the country in rushing with 1,140 yards for the second straight season.
Stephenson is among the CIS' most decorated players in history. In addition to winning the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2006, he also captured the CIS rushing titles in 2005 and 2006, was a CIS First Team All-Canadian in 2005 and 2006, was an OUA All-Star in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and was the OUA MVP in 2006.
He is also the only player in CIS history to rush for 1,000 yards in three straight seasons.
Daryl also broke the OUA rookie rushing record of 1,192 yards in 2004 which resulted in him capturing the Norm Marshall Trophy as the OUA Rookie of the Year.
His outstanding career at the University of Windsor culminated with the Lancers retiring his #24 jersey from active competition.
