Lancers knock off Trine University

The Windsor Lancers Men's Basketball team turned in a solid early season performance as they knocked off Trine University 84-68 in exhibition play on Sunday afternoon at the St. Denis Centre.

The Lancers were led by senior point guard Josh Collins who filled the box score with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 9 assists. It was the Lancers' first victory of their non-conference schedule.

In Sunday's victory over NCAA Division III Trine, Collins, a fourth-year guard, set the tempo but had lots of help from a balanced Lancer offense.

"Collins was outstanding," U of W head coach Chris Oliver said. "He helped us keep the tempo fast and his teammates followed his lead. We played hard. We played fast. And really for an early non-conference game there was not much to critique."

The Lancers led Trine 21-15 after the first quarter and continued to lead for the rest of the game. Fourth-year forward Lien Phillip showed his all-around game contributing 16 points and 11 rebounds, including two three-point field goals. Michael Petrella, fifth-year guard, showed a high percentage from the three-point line, 4-6, for a game high 18 points.

"Eleven players played double digit minutes and contributed to us being able to sustain a full-court game for 40 minutes," Oliver said.

The Lancers shot 46.5 per cent from the field and 33.3 per cent in three-pointers.

Oliver continued, "We obviously have lots to work on and are far from a finished product but it was a positive return to game action performance for our team."

The Lancers played without fourth-year guard Enrico Diloreto, second-year guard Rotimi Osuntola and fourth-year guard Henock Araia, all of whom rested injuries.

Prior to the game on Sunday the Lancers' hosted a free youth basketball clinic with boys and girls from as far as Chatham participating. The Lancer players led the players in skills and drills to develop them as basketball players.

“It was fun and rewarding to be around so many passionate young players,” stated Diloreto. “We taught them the same drills and skills we use to develop as players and they responded with great effort and enthusiasm. I can't wait for our next opportunity to share with our young fans.”

The youth clinic was a great success and the team thanks all those who participated.

Windsor will next travel to Sault Ste. Marie to take on Algoma University on October 4th  in the OUA Showcase.
