WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers men's basketball team will look to continue its hot start to the season on the road this weekend, when the Lancers will take the court against the Laurentian Voyageurs and York Lions.
The Lancers (2-0) kicked off their conference schedule in dramatic fashion last Friday night by handing the defending national champion Carleton Ravens its first loss in two seasons. After trailing by 20-plus points in the third quarter, Windsor put together an incredible comeback that was assisted by senior
Lien Phillip who recorded a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. The Lancers would take over the lead late in the half en route to a 71-67 victory, knocking the Ravens off the top of the CIS rankings for the first time in 31 weekly polls that spanned just over two seasons.
Windsor was in tough the following evening against a gritty Ottawa team who almost orchestrated a comeback bid of their own in the second half after trailing by double-digits. However, the Lancers would hold off the Gee-Gees' charge to finish their season opening weekend with two important wins. Enrico Di Loreto led the Lancers with 14 points against Ottawa, while Phillip (Grenada) picked up his second double-double in as many games. Di Loreto, a London, Ont. native, averaged 13.5 points per game against Carleton and Ottawa, and was named Windsor's Male Athlete of the Week for his efforts.
The Lancers' streaking start to the year has allowed them to leap the CIS Top Ten Weekly Poll. After coming into the season ranked No. 9, Windsor has leapt up to become the No. 5 team in the country heading into this weekend's matches.
On Friday night, Windsor will travel to Sudbury, Ont. to take on the Voyageurs, a team that had a strong showing on the road last weekend. After giving up a double-digit lead to Brock in their season opener in St. Catharines, Ont., Laurentian regrouped to defeat a highly-touted McMaster squad that went to the OUA Final Four last season on a last second jump shot. Guard Alex Ratte tops the Voyageurs scoring through the opening weekend games with 23.0 points per game, while Georges Serresse and Manny Pasquale have averaged 17.5 and 17.0 points per game respectively.
In contrast, the York Lions (1-1) were dismantled by the Marauders last weekend, falling by 19 points in Hamilton. However, York was able to pull out a 70-69 victory over Brock the night after, and also enter the weekend with a .500 record. Veteran guard David Tyndale leads the Lions with 17.5 points per game.
