Lancers rebound to defeat Blues

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- Lien Phillip tallied a team-high 15 points and recorded 13 rebounds to tally his fifth double-double of the season, and Josh Collins added 13 points, as the Windsor Lancers men's basketball team rebounded from a Friday night loss to defeat the Toronto Varsity Blues 82-64 on Saturday night.

The Lancers (4-2) maintain their place atop the OUA West division with the win, while the Varsity Blues (2-4) find themselves at the bottom of the East.

The Lancers looked strong early in the contest, taking a 14-5 lead through the first six minutes of play.  The roof nearly came off the St. Denis Centre when Collins delivered Rotimi Osuntola Jr. an alley-oop that the Windsor native slammed for a big two points.  Collins came back after a Blues timeout and notched a three-pointer to help maintain the advantage.  However, two jumpers from beyond the arc by Dylan Churchill allowed Toronto to keep pace.

Two turnovers from the Blues' Alex Hill led to three more points from the home team early in the second.   However, Toronto stayed with the CIS No. 6 seed through most of the quarter, as both offenses struggled to find their grooves in the period.  However, a big three by Collins late in the half put his team up by eight, and the Lancers would take a 35-26 lead into the locker rooms.

Toronto's Dylan Churchill led all players with 10 points in the half, while Collins had eight to top the Lancers scoring through two quarters.  Windsor shot 38.9% in the half, compared to 36.4% from the Blues, and both teams recorded over 10 turnovers in a choppy first 20 minutes of play.

The Lancers jumped on the visitors early in the third quarter, quickly extending the lead to 15 by the 6:21 mark of the period.  Osuntola came up big on defence, denying Hill a long three with a block and turnover that turned into a three-pointer by Phillip.  The sophomore guard then picked up a hard-fought board and added a deuce for the men, putting them up by 20 points.

Hill got more aggressive in the latter half of the third, driving the lane.  The Toronto native got put on the line multiple times, and managed to bring the deficit down to 15.  Windsor took a 58-43 lead into the final quarter of play.

The Lancers began to pull away in the final quarter.  A three-point play by Michael Petrella (Brantford, Ont.) was followed by a basket from beyond the arc by Phillip (Grenada), extending the spread to 21.  However, the Blues would not go away, slicing into the advantage and coming within 13 midway through the fourth.   The comeback continued as Toronto's Arun Kumar notched a three to bring the advantage down to single digits with just over two minutes left.

But Osuntola was prepared to provide an encore, as the 6'5'' launched himself for another spectacular alley-oop dunk that brought the St. Denis crowd to life once more and spurred the Lancers to their fourth win of the season.

The Lancers travel to Kingston, Ont. next weekend for a match-up with the Queen's Gaels, and are back at the St. Denis Centre on January 3 when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks.
