WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers football team is back in action this weekend, travelling to London, Ont. for a Saturday afternoon match-up with the CIS No. 6 ranked Western Mustangs.
Coming into the weekend's games, the Lancers (2-1) find themselves in a three-way tie for third place in the OUA with Western and Guelph. The defending national champion McMaster Marauders and Queen's Gaels are both currently undefeated and sit atop conference standings.
After an unsettling home loss to the Gryphons on September 8, Windsor was able to regroup and find their stride again in the provincial capital by soundly defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 55-4 last Saturday, Sept. 15.
Mitch Dender (Amherstburg, Ont.) picked up 100 yards rushing as well as a touchdown in the victory, and
Austin Kennedy passed for 300 yards and looked very comfortable in his third outing of the season.
Kennedy currently leads all CIS quarterbacks with an average of 342.0 passing yards per game and is tied in the country with 8 passing TD's along with McMaster's Kyle Quinlan. The Windsor native has already surpassed the 1,000 passing yards mark just three games into the season.
Jordan Brescacin (Tecumseh, Ont.) is also co-leading the CIS with four touchdowns and is fifth with 126.0 receiving yards per game.
Evan Pszczonak is averaging 86.7 yards per game in the air as well for the Lancers.
The Mustangs suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday, falling to the No. 5 Queen's Gaels 18-11 in Kingston, Ont. Western is currently dominating the CIS in rushing, led by sophomore Garret Sandivo. The Vancouver native leads the nation with 125.7 yards carried per game while tallying five touchdowns so far this season. Yannick Harou is also recording 70 rushing yards per contest, placing him in the nation's top 20 in that category. Quarterback Donnie Marshall is averaging just under 200 yards in the air per game for Western.
The teams were non-combatants in the 2011 regular season, and last faced each other on Sept. 18, 2010 at Alumni Field. The Mustangs came out on top in the decision, defeating the Lancers 30-15. In the post season, the Lancers were knocked out by the Mustangs last year in the OUA semi-finals 33-27 in London.
Windsor and Western are each averaging 42.3 points scored per game thus far this year going into Saturday's contest, which will take place at TD Waterhouse Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
