Lancers stampede over Gee Gees 63-18 in season opener

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- The CIS No. 10-ranked Windsor Lancers football team kicked off their 2012 regular season with an offensive explosion, topping the Ottawa Gee-Gees 63-18 at Alumni Field on Labour Day Monday.

Former OUA all-star Austin Kennedy was deadly from behind centre, going 31-of-41 with six touchdowns, tying a team-record.  Kennedy broke two of his own records, passing for 482 yards on 31 completions.   Jordan Brescacin hit a milestone of his own in the midst of the victory, passing the 2,000 all-time receiving yards mark.  The Tecumseh, Ont. product picked up a formidable 214 yards receiving, adding a game-high three touchdowns in front of 4,133 Lancer faithful.

Evan Pszczonak added 129 yards on 7 receptions for Windsor while quarterback Aaron Colbon picked up 122 yards passing and 84 yards on the ground for Ottawa.

The Lancers struck early as Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) found Brescacin, who was left wide open in the Gee-Gees backfield.  The Tecumseh, Ont. native notched a game-high 55-yard TD reception, giving the home side an early 7-0 lead at the 10:54 mark.

The dynamic Lancer duo connected on Windsor's next possession, marching their squad down the field and extending their lead to 14-0.  Brescacin garnered 91 yards and two touchdown receptions before the first ten minutes of the contest had passed.

The disastrous opening quarter continued for Ottawa, as Brendan Gillanders fumbled on a punt return, giving the Lancers possession at the Gee-Gees 16-yard line.  After a couple of untimely penalties by the Gee-Gees put the ball on their own 1-yard line, Mitch Dender (Amherstburg, Ont.) used a great leap over the pile at scrimage to give Windsor a 21-0 spread.

Even the Lancers kicker got into the scoring spree, as Dan Cerino (Stoney Creek, Ont.) had a stunning 63-yard punt that could not be brought out by Ottawa, resulting in a rouge for the Lancers just before the end of a dominant opening quarter.

The Lancers kept their foot on the pedal early in the second half.  Starting from their own 6, Windsor marched down into Gee-Gees  territory and a 34-yard TD reception by Dylan Whitfield (Windsor, Ont.) topped off a 99-yard scoring drive.

An Austin Crumb (Harrow, Ont.) fumble on a punt return gave the Gee-Gees the ball in the Lancers' redzone, and Ottawa was able to get on the board with their first touchdown of the season midway through the second quarter.

Ottawa found some life after the score, striking again at the 2:22 mark of the period when running back Tommy Mack made a 10-yard TD run following an objectionable conduct call against the Lancers.

Brescacin passed the 2,000 yard mark late in the half after an 18 yard reception from Kennedy with 1.6 seconds left in the half.  That allowed Windsor to add a late field goal, and they would go into the half up 32-14.

Pszczonak (Amherstburg, Ont.) started out the second half by tallying a 31-yard TD reception for the Lancers, spreading the lead once again and snuffing out any hopes of a Gee-Gees comeback.  Kennedy continued to stay in the zone, finding Mark Riggi (Amherstburg, Ont.)  on Windsor's next possession for a monstrous 53-yard reception into the Gee-Gees endzone to put the Lancers up by five touchdowns.  Brescacin's third TD reception of the game sent Windsor into the final quarter with a convincing 56-14 lead.
Gilbert Stewart rounded out Windsor's scoring by grabbing his first rushing touchdown of the year early in the final quarter.  A depleted Ottawa squad managed a rouge and late field goal, but the Lancers sailed through the final quarter en route to their opening day triumph.

This was Windsor's third victory all-time against the Gee-Gees, and their second in as many games dating back to last season's 50-33 win in the OUA quarter-finals.

The Lancers have a short turn-around, as they hit Alumni Field this Saturday, September 8th against the Guelph Gryphons (0-1), who were soundly defeated by the defending CIS champion McMaster Marauders on Monday.  Opening kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday the NFL on Campus will be in town to promote OUA Football. Fans are invited to participate in a number  of inflatable football related activities, with plenty of prizes and giveaways.
