Lancers top McMaster in high-paced affair

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- Lien Phillip picked up a double-double including 16 points and 13 rebounds, and the Windsor Lancers men's basketball team extended their winning streak to four games with an 80-73 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Wednesday evening.

Enrico Diloreto tallied 15 points and seven boards, while Ismar Seferagic added 13 to help spur the Lancers to victory.  With the win, Windsor (11-3) maintains a 2.5-game lead for first place in the OUA West division.

Phillip (Grenada) drained a jumper from beyond the arc, but Taylor Black answered for the Marauders and the game was tied at 11-11 midway through a high-paced opening quarter.  Ismar Seferagic (Toronto) picked up four straight points for the Lancers, and Enrico Diloreto (London, Ont.) notched a floater in midair as Windsor took a slight 17-13 lead.  However, the visitors upped the tempo, and Joe Rocca recorded a four-point play, notching a three-pointer while taking a foul from Evan Matthews (Tecumseh, Ont.), to put McMaster up by two.  The home side rebounded, as a big block from Ryan Christie led to a lay-up for Matthews in transition.  An intense first period ended with the home side up 21-19.

Windsor notched five straight points to spread the lead before 90 seconds had passed in the second.  After a baseline drive and pull-up from Phillip that pushed the lead to nine, McMaster took a timeout to talk things over.  However, Seferagic found some space down the middle of the key, and faked the three to drive through the lane, finishing with his second dunk of the half.  Christie (Hamiton) then came up with a high block, extending to stop the ball at its height peak to help maintain the home spread.  Phillip received a back-door pass from Josh Collins (Toronto) for the easy lay-in, and Diloreto continued to be aggressive, driving the lane for another floater.  Windsor would extend upon its slim lead at the end of the first quarter, going into halftime leading 38-29.

For the second-straight period, Windsor jumped out for quick points to extend the lead into double-digits.  Matthews got in on the blocking act, denying Taylor Black, however Scott Laws drained a three on McMaster's next possession to try and stop the Lancers momentum.

After a Phillip baseline fade-away jumper that found the bucket, the Lancers forced two straight turnovers with their front-court pressure.  Nana Ntim (Bradford, Ont.)converted both opportunities, as Windsor jumped out to a 15-point lead, prompting a less-than-pleased Marauders coach Amos Connelly to call timeout.

McMaster shored up their play coming out of the break, bringing Windsor's lead back into single-digits with a mini-streak of their own.  After some strong offensive rebounding, Nathan McCarthy drained a mid-range jumper that pulled the visitors within six.  After a give-away that resulted in easy points for McMaster, the team exchanged turnovers as neither side could really seize the momentum in the third.

A big slam by Christie off a penetrating pass by Collins was followed by another Marauders turnover.  Phillip made good on the opportunity, picking up the basket plus the harm, and suddenly a four-point lead went back up to nine for the home side heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter started with a bang, as a turnover created by Christie was converted into another big slam by Matthews that spread the lead to 11 and excited the St. Denis Centre crowd.  After Joe Rocca notched a corner three that kept the Marauders close, Seferagic tallied a three-point play to respond.  Two made free throws from Michael Petrella gave Windsor a 15-point lead for the second time in the contest.

But after two straight Marauders three-pointers chopped into the advantage, coach Chris Oliver called timeout to talk things over at the 5:01 mark of the final quarter.  A long three by Collins gave Windsor some energy coming out of the break, and they maintained a 10-point spread up to the 2:00 mark.

McMaster cut the lead down to seven, and Nathan Pelech drained a three to bring them within four points with 21.1 seconds left in regulation.  However, the Lancers made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute, and the Marauders could not make up the deficit, falling back to the .500 regular season mark.

Windsor shot 42.5% from the floor, compared to 34.4% for the visitors, who totalled 24 turnovers on the night.  Rocca had a game-high 19 points, while Laws and Black added 18 and 16 respectively in a losing cause for the Marauders.

The Lancers will close out the week against Waterloo on Saturday afternoon, and are back at home on Saturday, February 2 when they host the Brock Badgers.
