Lancers top Gryphons, improve to 7-2

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- Enrico Diloreto tallied a game-high 21 points, sparking the Windsor Lancers men's basketball team to an 82-72 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night at the St. Denis Centre.

Lien Phillip picked up another double-double for Windsor, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds to help the Lancers (7-2) maintain their place at the top of the OUA West.  The Gryphons (3-6) were led by Daniel McCarthy who tallied 20 points on the night.

The offense was scarce in the opening minutes for the home team, as the Lancers managed just three points with over five minutes played in the first, while the visitors managed six for a slight lead at the 4:42 mark.  Coach Oliver decided a timeout was in order after not liking what was happening on the court.  Josh Collins hit a three coming out of the break to tie things up, but it wasn't until the 3:29 mark that either side hit double-digits.

Windsor put together a mini-streak, knocking down six straight including points off Gryphons turnovers to take their first lead of the game.  Michael Petrella made an impact late in the quarter, taking the ball end-to-end for two points against his former team before creating an offensive foul against the Gryphons that led to two more points for the home side.  The Brantford, Ont. native drained a long three to give his squad a 20-13 lead at the end of the first.

Petrella knocked down another shot from beyond the arc early in the second, and a lay-up from Collins extended the lead to 12.  After another turnover from the Gryphons, Guelph coach Chris O'Rourke called timeout in an attempt to stop the momentum.  The Lancers hit the bonus less than halfway through the period, allowing the Gryphons to make up some of the spread.  Daniel McCarthy nailed a corner three, but Windsor responded with four quick points after forcing another Guelph turnover.  But the visitors persevered to cut the lead to four late in the half.  Stefan Cornelissen brought Guelph within two, and Windsor would hold just a one point lead after two quarters of play.

McCarthy led all players with 12 points in the half, while Petrella led the Lancers with nine points on 3-of-8 shooting.  The half was foul-filled, and Windsor had both Collins and Enrico Diloreto (London, Ont.) with three fouls heading into the break.  The Gryphons shot 44.4% in the first half, compared to 28.5% from the Lancers.

Adam Kemp put the visitors on top, scoring the first two points of the half for Guelph, and Michel Clarke notched a three to provide a 44-41 advantage at the 7:00 minute mark.  However, after a quiet first half, Phillip burst to the rim for the bucket and the harm, tying the contest.  However, the Gryphons would capitalize on a couple of Lancers turnovers, carrying a six-point lead through the middle portion of the quarter.

However, Diloreto came alive in the final minutes of the third, dropping twelve points including a deep three pointer at the buzzer as the Lancers jumped out to a 60-54 lead at the end of three quarters after a 14-2 run.  The fourth year guard picked up where he left off in the fourth, pulling up for another three at the top of the arc and restoring Windsor's double-digit spread.  However, Diloreto would foul out of the contest with 4:21 remaining.

Windsor maintained a nine-point lead with two minutes remaining, and Phillip (Grenada) dropped a three after a Gryphons bucket to give his team some breathing room.  The Gryphons attempted to foul and put Windsor on the free-throw, but were unable to make up any ground on their possession, as Windsor would clinch its seventh win.  The Lancers shot 39.7% from the floor, while Guelph was 39.4% in the game.  Windsor also outrebounded the visitors 52-43, and picked up 18 offensive boards.

The Lancers will look to sweep the season series against Laurier when they visit the Golden Hawks next Wednesday evening in Waterloo, Ont.  Windsor will return to the St. Denis Centre next Sunday, January 13 for a 3:00 p.m. afternoon match-up with the Waterloo Warriors.
