Lancers fall to national No. 1 Mustangs

Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.- The Windsor Lancers football team could not recover from a massive first quarter deficit, falling to the undefeated Western Mustangs 51-23 in their final home game on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Windsor gave up 24 points to the top-ranked team in the CIS in the first 15 minutes of the contest, as the potent Western offence recorded 510 yards of total offence compared to 289 from the Lancers.

Austin Kennedy passed for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Mitch Dender was held at bay for the first time in a few weeks, attempting seven rushes for 22 yards. Evan Pszczonak caught eight passes for a game-high 126 yards. Stephon Miller was a bright spot for the Windsor defence, picking up three sacks on the afternoon to lead all defenders. Casey Wright had two touchdown passes and two picks in relief of Kennedy for a total of three Lancer interceptions, while the Mustangs fumbled four times throughout the game, turning over the ball on two occasions.

After playing a stunned opening quarter, the Lancers regrouped for a spirited second stanza where they took a chunk out of the Mustangs' healthy lead. After a Dan Cerino field goal got the home team on the board, Jake Nicoletti blocked a Western punt, swinging the momentum towards Windsor. A Lancers recovery and no yards penalty to Western put the ball on the visitors' 27.  Kennedy needed just two plays to get into the end zone, finding Brett Lumley for a 19-yard reception that cut the lead to 24-10.

However, two Mustangs field goals extended the lead to 20 at halftime, and 13 more points in the third quarter put the game out of reach for the Lancers. With the score at 35-10 for the Mustangs, Kennedy's pass was picked off at midfield and taken in for six more points, deflating the Lancers offence and sinking any hope of a comeback.

The Lancers (4-3) head into their bye week tied for fourth place in the OUA conference with the Ottawa Gee-Gees (4-3), who they take the field with in the final game of the regular season. The winner could potentially earn fourth place outright and a home playoff match.
