Box Score WATERLOO, Ont.-
Dan Cerino scored a rouge in the overtime period and his defence came up with a game-winning field goal block, as the Windsor Lancers football team survived a late comeback from Laurier, defeating the Golden Hawks 26-25 at University Stadium on Saturday afternoon.Â
After surrendering a 10-point lead with under 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Lancers were able to collect themselves in the overtime, as the defence blocked and recovered a 41-yard field goal attempt by the Golden Hawks after Cerino field goal try sailed wide to the right of the goal posts for a single rouge.Â
The victory extends Windsor's win streak to three games, while the loss drops Laurier to 1-5 on the season.
Running back
Mitch Dender had another strong week on the ground, rushing for a game-high 155 yards while notching both a rushing and receiving touchdown.
Austin Kennedy had a clean game, throwing for 189 yards and two touchdowns.
The teams traded leads in the first half, Windsor going up early on a 23-yard TD strike from Kennedy to Dender. However, a Laurier drive midway through the second quarter put the home side back in front. Cerino pulled the Lancers within two points with a 32-yard field goal at the end of the first half.
After a quiet third quarter where the only score was a safety conceded by the Lancers, Windsor's offence exploded for 14 points in less than three minutes. After
Clark Grace tallied a 12-yard TD reception, the Windsor defence forced a quick two-and-out from Laurier, and Dender took over from there. The fifth-year senior put a clinic on the Laurier defence rushing for 12 yards on two consecutive runs before breaking through for a 35-yard sprint to the Laurier 3. Dender finished what he started, taking the ball into the endzone on his fourth consecutive carry to give Windsor a 10-point lead with 9:53 left in regulation.
However, Laurier broke through on their next possession with a 53-yard touchdown pass that brought them within three with just under seven minutes to play. The Golden Hawks took over the ball late in the game, and were threatening to win it outright after a pass interference penalty put the ball on Windsor's 14. However, the Lancers held their ground, and Laurier had to settle for a game-tying field goal as time ran out.
In the overtime period, Windsor scored a rouge on Cerino's miss, and the defence and special teams claimed the victory with a field goal block at the 41-yard line.
The Lancers improve to 4-2 on the season, and return to Alumni Field next Saturday afternoon for their final home contest against the undefeated Western Mustangs.
