Box Score WINDSOR, Ont.-
Austin Kennedy completed 26-of-33 passing attempts for 344 yards and three touchdowns, and the Windsor Lancers football team brought their regular season record up to the .500 mark, defeating the Carleton Ravens 44-14 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
After losing their past two contests, including a nail-biter to the Gryphons last weekend on a game-ending field goal, the Lancers took out their frustrations on the OUA's most recent entrant, putting together nearly 600 yards of total offence against the Ravens.
With the victory, Windsor evens its conference mark at 2-2, while the Ravens fall to 0-3 but were able to record their highest points total on the year to date after putting up just four points against Western and eight against Waterloo.
After a
Dan Cerino field goal on the opening drive gave them an early lead, the Lancers were looking to pick up points on their third possession after the defence forced two straight two-and-outs from the Ravens . However, a
Dallas Boow fumble in the visitors' territory was snatched up by Carleton, preventing the Lancers from extending the lead.
However, Windsor would not be denied on their next possession, as Kennedy found
Dylan Whitfield for a 12-yard touchdown reception, extending the lead to 10-0 after one quarter of play. After some strong ground work by rookie
Gilbert Stewart who moved Windsor into Ravens' territory with a 17 yard rush late in the quarter, Kennedy orchestrated a couple of passes for 10-plus yard completions that moved the Lancers into the red zone. Kennedy polished the scoring drive with a nine-yard TD run of his own early in the second quarter.
Windsor struck later in the first half after starting their drive on the Carleton 42 yard line. Senior running back
Mitch Dender took over from there, first catching a pass for 11 yards and following that with a big 24-yard run to the Carleton 7-yard line. Dender finished what he started, punching a 7-yard TD run that gave his team a commanding 24-0 lead at halftime.
Windsor picked up where it left off in the opening half, as Kuinton Elliot intercepted Nick Gorgichuk's pass at midfield and returned it to the Carleton 38, once again giving the Lancer offense excellence field position. Kennedy made good on the Elliott pick, completing four straight passes, the last one to Boow for a six yard TD reception.
The Ravens, who re-entered the OUA this season after leaving the university football scene in 1998, notched their first road touchdown midway through the third quarter, moving the ball 75 yards, including a 32-yard run by Andrew Banerjee, to break the Windsor shutout bid.
However, Kennedy responded with a 52-yard strike to
Mark Carter that put the Lancers on the Carleton 6. Whitfield picked up his second touchdown catch of the day on the next play, and Windsor re-solidified its significant advantage.
Carleton would put up another touchdown late, but the contest was already decided at that point, as the Lancers were able to snap a two-game losing streak.
Windsor will return to Alumni Field next Saturday, September 14 when they host the visiting Toronto Varsity Blues. Game-time is set for 7:00 p.m.
