Lancer Football season ends with loss to Guelph

Box Score The Lancer Football season came to an end Saturday night with a 31-21 road loss to the No. 5 Guelph Gryphons in the OUA quarter-finals

Windsor finished the season with a 4-4 record, finishing sixth overall in the standings, and earning a berth into the post season for the third straight year.

The Lancer offence was led by fourth year quarterback Austin Kennedy who went 20-for-37 with 255 yards passing and a touchdown. Rob Farquharson led the Gryphon offence with 133 rushing yards and a long of 23 yards, while Saxon Lindsey led their receivers with a total of 77 yards.

The Gryphons started the game strong as they scored two quick touchdowns to take an early 14-0 lead. On the Gryphons first drive of the game, the Lancers were called for an unnecessary roughness penalty that set the Gryphons up at first-and-goal. Farquharson ran it in for a touchdown for a quick 7-0 lead before they made it back onto the board again after an interception return by Curtis Newton, to put the Gryphons up 14-0.

Windsor would get on the board after an interception return by Kuinton Elliot to bring Windsor within seven after a convert by Dan Cerino. The Gryphons then responded with a 19 yard field goal to build their lead to ten 17-7 in the second quarter.

Late in the quarter, the Lancers faked a punt with Cerino throwing for a first down, and then defensive back Dave McDuffie putting together a successful drive that put them on Guelph's 7-yard line. Kennedy fumbled the snap, but recovered it himself to hand it off to Mitch Dender. Dender ran it up the middle to make it 17-14 to end the first half.

The Gryphons started out the second half with another scoring drive with a touchdown by James Ingram. Windsor would concede a safety later on in the third quarter to make it 26-14 Gryphons.

Windsor's final score came from Dylan Whitfield  who ran it around the pack from the one-yard line to bring the Blue & Gold within one score with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter.

From there, the Lancers made a strong push to tie the game but conceded a safety and allowed a Guelph field goal to bring the final score to 31-21.

Windsor finished the game with 362 total offensive yards and 18 first downs.
