Lancers fall to Ottawa in Wilson Cup semi-finals

Box Score TORONTO- Warren Ward and Johnny Berhanemeskel combined for 47 points, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees nailed a formidable 14 three-pointers en route to an 78-58 victory over the Windsor Lancers in the second OUA semi-final at the Wilson Cup Final Four.

Playing at the Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens), the Lancers were unable to find their shooting, working at just a 29.3% efficiency compared to 46.7% from the No. 5 Gee-Gees.  Lien Phillip led the men with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Enrico Diloreto added 16 in a losing cause for Windsor.

Ottawa will join the defending national champion Carleton Ravens in the OUA Finals tomorrow as well as the CIS Final 8 next weekend, while Windsor will face Lakehead in the third-place match in a last-gasp opportunity for a place in the national championships.

Diloreto knocked down a long three-pointer to help the Lancers to a 9-7 lead early in the quarter.  The London, Ont. native then found Rotimi Osuntola Jr. with an arching alley-oop pass after an Evan Matthews rejection on the defensive end.  The teams then traded threes as a long-ranger from Michael   Petrella was followed by a jumper from beyond the arc from Ward.  Phillip (St. Mark's, Grenada) notched a three-point play, picking up the lay-in plus the harm to even the game near the end of the opening quarter.  However, Ward gave Ottawa an 18-16 lead heading into the second with a late-period bucket.

The Gee-Gees were able to maintain their slim advantage through most the quarter, as Ward stayed hot along with Gill.  The Lancers remained within striking distance, as Evan Matthews (Tecumseh, Ont.) dropped a slam dunk for the No. 6 Lancers.  But the Gee-Gees caught fire in the final minutes of the half, knocking down three straight baskets from three-point territory to take a commanding 37-27 lead heading into the locker rooms.

Diloreto brought the Lancers within four after some strong offensive plays in the beginning of the third, picking up eight points.  Phillip continued to battle in the post, getting to the foul line on multiple occasions in the period and keeping Windsor close as the Gee-Gees tried to increase the deficit.  However, after cutting the lead to four, Windsor was unable to hold off the number two seed in the East, as Ottawa heated up once again near the end of the period.  They would take a nine-point lead into the final quarter.

Ottawa extended the lead to 12 moments into the final period.  After a mini-run by the Lancers brought the lead back into single digits, the Gee-Gees made good on a couple more open three-pointers to nullify their momentum.  The Lancers had no answer for Ottawa's shooting, and as a result the Gee-Gees were able to spread the advantage out of Windsor's reach.

The Lancers will have a second opportunity to book their ticket to the CIS Final 8 in the nation's capital tomorrow afternoon when they take the court with the division rival Thunderwolves in the conference bronze medal match.  The winner will join Ottawa and Carleton at the national championships.  The teams split the season series in Thunder Bay, and both contests were won by single digits.

Tomorrow's third-place game will take place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre with tip-off set for 4:00 p.m.  The contest will be broadcast live on The Score Television Network.
