Lancer Volleyball splits weekend in Toronto

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lancer men's volleyball team earned a four set 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 19-25, 25-20) victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon, before falling in three straight sets 3-0 (27-29, 15-25, 22-25) to the Ryerson Rams on Sunday in Toronto.

The Lancers are now  6-10 on the season and are tied for sixth place in the OUA standings with the Queen's Gaels, who are 6-9 with a game in hand.

On Saturday against Toronto, the two teams exchanged points in the early goings of the first set with the Lancers holding a narrow 16-12 lead at the technical time out.  The Blues attempted to rally, but Windsor ended the first on a 9-5 streak and took the set with a serving ace, 25-18.

The Lancers got out to an early 6-2 lead, but back-to-back kills from Jake Dysselhof evened the score at 8-8. The two teams traded points from there and Windsor took a narrow 16-15 lead at the break. The set remained close, with neither team building more than a two-point lead, Windsor took it 25-23.

The third proved to be an epic back-and-forth battle, until an Aleksa Miladinovic ace gave Toronto a 10-8 lead. Miladinovic came up with a big block and Toronto held a 16-12 lead at the technical time out. Windsor attempted to rally, but the Blues secured the set with a big kill at 25-19.

Toronto got out to a 5-0 lead and eventually took a 10-5 lead. Windsor battled back to bring the game within three as Toronto led 16-13 at the time out. The Lancers continued to rally and took the lead, 19-18, en route a 25-20 fourth-set win.

Greg Simone led all players with 14 kills, three aces and two blocks for the Lancers, with Scott Hickman adding 10 kills in the win.

On Sunday, Windsor battled a tight game against the host Rams. Extra points were needed in the first set, and Ryerson eventually came out on top 29-27. The Lancers struggled in the second, but rebounded in the third to keep the game close. Unfortunately for the Blue & Gold, they were unable to capitalize on some opportunites and dropped the final set 25-22.

Simone once again led the Lancers with 9 kills and 10 points, while Shawn Reaume had 8 kills and 10 points.

Windsor will return home next weekend for their final pair of regular season home games. They will host the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, and the York Lions on Sunday after honouring their graduating athletes in a pre-game ceremony set for 3:00pm. Both games can be viewed live at www.goLancers.tv.
